This will hopefully be my first full year on the trails with the Nytro thanks to Dave and his crew. The question I have is for you guys that are using meth injection on the trail. I am running 14LBS of boost on her, and using here on the trails. I have a one gallon meth container in the rear. I am wondering how many tanks of gas per one gallon of meth do you think I will use, or maybe how many gallons of meth I will use per tank of gas LOL.. I have the trail tank on here also, and a blow off valve on. We do on average 150-175 miles a day and I want to see how much spare meth I should bring with. I have the side bags with gas cans from Yamaha, but the sled just doesn't look the same with them on there. Thanks for the help guys

Meth

At what LB of boost do you have your controller set at to start spraying meth? I was running 15lbs of boost and my spray would kick in at 8lbs. I have a standard gas tank on my nytro and my meth tank that Dave built for me holds less than a gallon. I would go through about a tank and a half of fuel before I ran out of meth. It all really depends on how hard your on the throttle!!

Thanks for the help. I believe the method kicks in around 6lbs of boost . And the holding tank is a 1.5 gallon coolmist trunk tank connected to Daves method setup

I have two 2 quarter tanks = 1 gallon. I use 2 tanks of fuel (20 gal) to 1 tank of meth. I have my kick in point set at 8 (max) lbs and max at 18 lbs.

Supersled - Yes without the long complex awnser windshield washer fluid with methonol in it burns very slow and cools the intake charge. Its not raising octane but you can make mods as if you were.

ie run pump gas on stock engine and 10 psi of boost vs shimmed like mine on no meth.

If you do the octane calc at the top of the page just anectodaly any combo of boost where you need 100-105 octane fuel can be run on pump with meth spraying.

Its really attractive option for HP junkies. Myself just to many miles in a season to worry about a pump freezing up or anything failing and me running 18 lbs of boost with no meth equals engine goes BOOM. That said a lot of the meth systems have a ton of safety features in them to tell you when its not working and if you carry a can of torco as backup you could actually dump that in get back to the shop and figure it out.

Bingo.... that's why I use it. Plain 91 octane at 14lbs can be expensive. So the method is my insurance with my low compression pistons

I run 22 lbs of boost at 10:1 CR on 93 octane US measurements, running a shim is way lower compression that this and my motor is still running strong.

The relative octane of blowing alcohol/water is about 120 RON. The alcohol in the mix is there to avoid freezing of the mix, the water is what does the job being a superb detonation preventor. Water sucks heat out of air/fuel mix when it evaporates lowering intake charge temps. When the vapor enters the combustion chamber the vapor sucks away even more heat removing heat from hotspots within the combustion chamber. Even tho water has a theoretical knock point 8 times higher than the best race fuel it does not contribute much to the overall octane of the mix due to the small amout of water in the mix. It's the heat removing property that plays the most important role in avoiding detonation. So even if the mix of water/alcohol/gasoline is only slightly higher; the mix works as if it was at 120 octane RON. Pretty cool :-)

Both alcohol and methanol will contribute to a cooler burn, together with water we have a nice combo allowing us to add loads of boost without going bankrupt buying 116+ octane race fuel.

Sorry kinger I just had to :-) And this is still the short version LOL :jump:

Now one dumb question that has been going through my mind. When it gets very cold outside the sprayers on the windshield of your car do clog or freeze. Has this ever happened to a meth kit? Obviosly not near the engine since the heat of it should compensate for the cold outside. I'm wondering like in my case where I have the pump and meth in the rear. Then it is piped under the seat to the motor and solenoids from there. Just thinking out loud...

I figured meth as you say was methanol. I just couldn't figure out how or why you'd use it in a motor, lol! Thx for the explanations, gents!

Of course, at work when any one talks about someone ingesting "meth", it usually means very bad things!

sheetwright - I would not know the awnser to your question but its one of the reasons that has kept me away from running meth. I dont trust all the pumps and nozzles and lines working as they should when I start it up at -30 on a bagger trip, and she gets all of 5-10 mins to warm up and then I'm riding.

You have to 51% alcohol by weight blended with 49% water by weight. Alcohol weight roughly 0.75:1 compared to water, make sure you spend enough of the antifreeze liquid alcohol, methanol etc. Another thing, you spray at 150-250 lbs of pressure. I also run a failsafe controller to control flow, if flow drops under a preset treshold a solenoid bypasses my boost controller dropping boost to the wastegate setting which is low enough for the fuel I run.

Thanks that makes sense. As of now I am actually using boost juice instead of actual windshield washer fluid. (very similar). I will double check. I had a safety like that on there before I had it finished up by Dave. I know he increased the spray. So I should be set. Looks like if i don't run like a complete manic I should get a good part of the day or most of the day out of my tank also. Thats good news for my storage issue.

Brillant! Works great on a Turbo not so much on a supercharger though. Still one of the best ideas I have heard though. Cool!
