My 2006 Attak will pass 11,000 miles this year and I'm making my maintenance list. I'm going to get a new drive chain and am wondering if I need to get the 2 gears it rides on. Top is $54.87 and lower is $204.76. Chain is $147.81. That's a lot of coin for me!! And I hate to spend money on something that isn't really broke...

What do you guys think?

hondo has almost 40000 miles on stock gears and chain on his venture,as long s you keep oil in it and change it once in a while it should go a long time

The main reason I was going to replace chain was that the sled was used to pull another sled and rider 80 miles. That was 6000 miles ago though and no issues....

Sled being towed was an Artic Cat!!

Since I have been a automotive technician for 30+ years and replaced many timing chains which is very close to this chain (plate type) I would not worry about it. Plate type chains can go 70k plus and double roller chains can go twice that. (That is why they went to double rollers in automotive applications) If you were regearing I could see a change of the chain to keep adjustment in specs. I would be more concerned about bearings then anything else. Jackshaft-drive axle and idler wheels. If it were run low and stretched then it would be a concern. Also if you want to spend the money to ease your mind, look at the gears and if you see wear on the tooth face then replace. Keep in mind the top gear would more then likely see the most wear then the bottom due to it's size it rotates a lot more then the bottom gear. This past summer I pulled my Son's chain case apart to replace his jackshaft bearing, the chain and gears showed no wear at 11k miles.

Thanks a lot!! That's what I wanted to hear! What your saying makes sense to me. I don't have a problem spending the money to replace but if its not needed, why do it? Its never been run low on gear oil and when I adjust it always goes back to where it was.

I'm was planning on replacing the bearings.

gears

if that's your local dealer with those prices you better move because
he does not like you.

Make sure you are checking Port Yamaha's web site for the best prices, quick shipping and first class customer service in the parts deptartment. If you need questions answered call Kevin! When replacing bearings make sure they are not stamped "Made in CHINA" they dont last as long as Jap or "USA" made bearings. I.E. Detroit ball bearings

Thanks for info on prices. The prices I quoted were from my dealers web site and usually they are pretty solid. I have used Port Yamaha before and have nothing but good to say about them. Guess I'll check them out again!!

Can't remember if this is from my Nytro or Smoker manual, but the spec should be the same anyway. Check a couple sections and then wiggle all the pins to make sure they are all still tight(in the direction it would stretch).

I just checked Port Yamaha prices and your right. A lot cheaper. Top of my head, exhaust donuts $14.95 my dealer, Port is $11.00 something. That's a big difference...
