New England Sled Talk on Facebook. Guy received a ticket from Wardens for Non Stock Exhaust on a Sidewinder yesterday.
From Bangor but did not say where this happened, and did not know what kind of exhaust he has on it. Just said that it was not loud and his dad’s Viper was louder.

Any more details anybody ?

My thoughts are, he just bought the sled from private sales or it was borrowed, whereas he did not know style of muffler or where he was during the ticket event.

Anyone here know any more ? Are you on TY ? If so more details please.

Bet it was a SQ.....they are not quiet and seen many get ticketed.

Stock modded is the way....unless they are measuring outlets, then you need STOCK.

Hoping to hear more details concerning.
I tried to check his post on Facebook this morning to see if he had any clearer answers, but it is now buried in that Facebook world. As you can tell, I need to spend more time learning how to navigate that forum on Facebook.

Maybe a good New Years resolution huh ? I shall now have the time.

I have the hurricane quite trail muffler, I thought it was to quite when I first put it on . But after 600 miles on it , it got louder but it’s almost perfect now , u can hear the motor at full throttle over the wind noise at full speed. Idle is marginally louder than stock .

It's crazy how much times have changed. I hear in Quebec they are even measuring the outlet sizes. I've been riding in Quebec since 1997. My stock 1999 Polaris XC 600 was louder than a Sidewinder with several of the aftermarket muffler offerings.

Yes we are hearing this as well, I think it might be the areas where certain trails were closed due to noise and trying to re-open(Sorta below Mt/Tremblant region)

I know in Northern Qc where we went last spring, it was a non issue at 2 checkpoints for me nothing. Mine is stock modded and darn near stock quiet. But if one was to measure, that would be all she wrote....Grrr.

Gotta be all them loud canned 2s that killed it for everyone, as the turbos are just not loud(high pitch brapp)

Maine law doesnt have anything to do with noise anymore as too subjective. The law states exhaust can't be altered or changed period. If your aftermarket exhaust is stock quiet and doesnt garner attention you may be ok, but if they are in question, they will have you remove panel and investigate further.

Which comes back to how you're riding when you come up on the wardens.

What happens if you have tamper-proof screws instead of the stock ones and "forget" the special tool at home? ;-)

Lol...I dont know, you're on your own in that case.

I live on the Maine NB border, if I cross into Maine do I have to have my stock exhaust on? Or is that only for Maine residents?

I would think that anyone riding in Maine would be required to abide by Maine laws.

Unless your sled is obnoxiously loud, I dont think you'll have issues crossing through a port of entry, however should you meet a Warden in the trail once here you may have issues.

Oh its obnoxiously loud for sure! I ride off trail, on crown land primarily in the middle of no where so its never been an issue for me.
I was just wondering if where im not a Maine resident if my sled has to follow Maine rules, kind of like cars from other provinces don't have to abide by New Brunswick's vehicle laws when they are traveling through, tinted windows, license plates on the front etc.
I don't even have factory exhaust for my sled, was modified when I bought it.

Well, I did not want to lead you astray so I called the Maine Warden Service and asked this question on your behalf. This was the answer I revieved:

Cars/motorcycles can circumvent some Maine laws because they are being operated on a public way. Snowmobiles are operated on private land, hence are required to follow noise ordinances and therefore subject to Maine law, hence a citizen from NB can not legally operate a snowmobile in Maine with anything other than a stock exhaust.

Hope this helps.
