I have been involved for years with snowmobile clubs and honestly there is no room on private land for any exhaust that is louder than stock. I have had to beg and apologize to landowners who closed the trails on their property because of loud exhaust complaints. The two things that will close a trail instantly is loud exhaust and failure to stay on marked trails.
I hope guys stay smart with their mods because when a section of trail gets closed we all suffer the consequences.

The thing with the turbo 4 strokes is to me most of the mufflers aren't obnoxiously loud, they get a throatier tone but still not as loud as a lot of stock sleds out there.
Well, I did not want to lead you astray so I called the Maine Warden Service and asked this question on your behalf. This was the answer I revieved:
Cars/motorcycles can circumvent some Maine laws because they are being operated on a public way. Snowmobiles are operated on private land, hence are required to follow noise ordinances and therefore subject to Maine law, hence a citizen from NB can not legally operate a snowmobile in Maine with anything other than a stock exhaust.
Hope this helps.
Thank you, good to know, guess I won't be going to Maine sledding! Theres a time & place for loud exhausts, residential areas is not one of those places.

I have the hurricane quite trail muffler, I thought it was to quite when I first put it on . But after 600 miles on it , it got louder but it’s almost perfect now , u can hear the motor at full throttle over the wind noise at full speed. Idle is marginally louder than stock .
I have the same muffler, just got it this fall. And in my opinion it is a lot louder at idle over stock. From throttle tip to Max it is definitely louder than stock but hoping it should pass any trail check points, was honestly hoping it was closer to stock sound. I wonder if a mod stock would be quieter.

I feel for a muffler to be quiet as stock it would have to pass my "flashlight test". Take a flashlight to either end and see if you can see the light at the other end, if not then should be good to go. Any stock muffler I ever did that to you could not see light through it and ever after market one light could be seen. I know that this sounds primitive but it's been something I have noticed as a common link between stock vs. after market.

I can say from riding my sled for the first time with my SM Tune Bundle(Hurricane) last week(425 miles), that they are VERY Legit!! Loved mine!
Tons of power..and same quiet stock sound with SM!!
If you’re worried about a ticket with aftermarket Muffler...I’d give the SM bundle a try.

Maine does not abide by motorvehicle codes,we are only subject to Inland and fisheries laws,in N.H. if you get an OUI you lose your right to drive both car and sled, not in maine. In maine your OUI has no effect on you losing your right to drive a car,in fact you don't need a drivers license. But if you are arrested while on your sled by a warden, they can impound your sled, and send you to jail, once bail is posted you are free to go,unless a fine is required and court charged assessed. ut you can not lose your right to the roadways in maine,or any other state.Oh its obnoxiously loud for sure! I ride off trail, on crown land primarily in the middle of no where so its never been an issue for me.
I was just wondering if where im not a Maine resident if my sled has to follow Maine rules, kind of like cars from other provinces don't have to abide by New Brunswick's vehicle laws when they are traveling through, tinted windows, license plates on the front etc.
I don't even have factory exhaust for my sled, was modified when I bought it.
OUI in any vehicle is downright stupidity. I like my drinks as mush as anyone but keep it off the trails/roads

Maryland is the same way. Boats and sleds are separate from cars as far as violations. All the law makers live on the bay and bar hop on boats. Go figure. Even though my property is riverfront in WV, the Potomac River is controlled by Maryland so I have to go by their laws and registration practices.Maine does not abide by motorvehicle codes,we are only subject to Inland and fisheries laws,in N.H. if you get an OUI you lose your right to drive both car and sled, not in maine.
