I check with my local PEP-boys today and inquired if they could cross reference an oil filter based on size, shape, dimensions, thread, etc. They stated that they could and do it quite often for auto, farm, and motorcycle applications all the time. Has any else tried this? I think that my dealer is crazy for wanting $16 for an oil filter.
I know, I know that is half the price of a gallon of 2-smoke oil, but when I can buy a oil filter for my car for $3.00 and a one for my boat at $4.50, $16 seems like a rip-off(just like most dealer sold items... )
Any one else try this with success or failure?????

In my case, I would like to know just in case I had to replace it in an emergency - been there done that, couldn't find one except to call one of the employees at home so they could open the shop for me. I only paid about $9.00 - NBD

WOW!!! I was not expecting a positive response, much less part numbers Has anyone used any of these others with any success or not? I will probably stick with a quality name-brand like AC or K&N, but just did not want to pay more than $10 for an oil filter

The box I just got a Yamaha filter out of is marked 5DM-13440-00. I had e-mailed Wix and they replied that there is no replacement currently available. What is the 5GH ?

I'm assuming the 3 and 4 cylinders use the same filter?

The RX (4cylinder) series sleds use the 5GH-13440-00-00 filter and the RS (3cylinder) series sleds use the 5DM-13440-00-00. The 5GH-13440 retails for $11.39 and the 5DM for $14.51. The 5DM is a much shorter filter in depth than the 5GH style. In my opinion this is one area where I would not short change my sled with a questionable alternative just to save $5.00. I don't have anything against the high quality aftermarket ones but would question some of the cheaper ones.

I hear ya, Port. I agree. Just from my previous parts counter experience, I remember when we changed the "level" that we had our OEM parts prices set at. There were different levels built into the computer system at approved % increases over cost.
ie level 5 might be cost, level 4 was then cost + 10%, etc. etc.
I do not remember the exact way that it worked, but that was the jist of it. MY PROBLEM IS THAT MY LOCAL DEALER SEEMS TO HAVE THEIR %'S SET AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL!!!! I ALWAYS FIND OUT LATER THAT OTHER DEALERS HAVE PARTS FOR LESS THAN WHAT I PAID. I am really tired of supporting my local dealer only to find out he is raping me....doh, me for going back, and back and back....I was just trying to make a stand with the aftermarket oil filter idea. I did it earlier in the season by obtaining Champion spark plugs for my wife's Polaris through a my local auto parts store and save almost $4.00 per plug!!!!

I know that everyone like to be "safe" and change their oil filter often, but remember that Yamaha's reccomended oil filter change schedule is once after 500 miles and then not again until 12,000 miles! Based on this, you should only have to buy one oil filter in your sled's life, so whay not make it a Yamaha filter?
In a family landscape contracting business, I was responsible for maintaining over 100pcs of small to heavy equipment... lawnmowers to skid steer loaders to dump trucks... I can tell you from experience that changing the oil is THE most important thing to do for engine longevity. However, every oil change DOES NOT have to include an oil filter change.
Oil is not just oil. It has additives in it that keep contamination (such as metal particles, dust, etc) in suspension. The filter removes the larger suspeneded particles while the smaller ones escape even through the filter. However, because the contamination is in suspension, thus covered with a film of oil, they do not damage the engine. The catch here is that there is only a discrete amount of these additives and once they are consumed, or
Save money by understanding oil theory, not looking for a low-cost filter that might not perform the intended job.
In a seperate topic, I will post a great explanation of oil theory. I will label this topic, Oil Theory. I think you will find it informative...

with contaminates, the oil is useless. The message her is to change your oil often, but let the filter go for 2-3 changes before worrying about it.saturated
