When the Vipers were introduced in Minneapolis at the dealer show not one of the prototypes had seats that could be clipped in position, the clips did not line up properly. I'm sure at this time Yamaha decided they needed a bolt. So far the production Vipers I have seen all clip into position with no problems, bolt is really not needed but does offer a little more security.I hope that it wasn't the Racewerx seat fastener because I just installed one myself! As far as running with no fastener in the seat latch you should be fine. I was told by my dealer that the Arctic Cat version of the Viper does not have a fastener on the seat latch. Yamaha however wanted one on the Viper.

That's incorrect. The Cat version has a seat screw just like all of the models have always had. Some dealers spout some funny things.
I agree. A screw is not needed unless you are concerned about security.

I will let my dealer know that he is "spouting some funny things" LOL! Seriously though, I personally like the security of the fastener. It is not like we have to remove the seat on a regular basis. I put the Racewerx fastener on mine just to make it easier to access the battery in case someone (including myself) ever needs a jump start. I carry a compact set of jumper cables in my rear storage bag just for this reason.
Merry Christmas everyone!

im not happy with it. sheetmetal screws directly into the frame.
snap-on is happy, im buying torx bits and screwdrivers like mad.
I garantee this one will be a early trade in model, and not a keep it forever model like my nytro. kinda wish i didnt buy it, and i even waited till the 2nd year so yamaha could yell at arctic crap a bit.

Well besides the missing fasteners that I discovered, so far I haven't found any other assembly issues. The fit and finish is very good, dare I say near Japan standards (except for the non Japan quality hardware).
I finally got a chance to ride it a bit (50 miles now) and I am very impressed with how it rides. Much better than any Yamaha I have ever owned.
Time will tell how it holds up in the years to come. I plan on keeping it for a while so I bought 4 extra years of YES so that I am covered in the event that it doesn't hold up as well as my previous Yamaha's. Right now by biggest concern is getting some decent snow to ride on here in MN!

Thanks, ya I too put on about 35 miles. Break in kinda sucks especially when there is not enough snow on the trails to ride real far. I have 80 total now.

In the nose area there are many of these types of fasteners. If it was built in Japan I am sure that they would have used machine threads into threaded holes rather than these coarse threaded "sheetmetal" (self threading) fasteners.

i have a '15, and they use them everywhere! front bumper, factory skidplates, windshield, just not going to take the vibration.
you should see the windshield setup, its a beauty. coarse torx screws, into a poppout plastic insert, that wouldnt even hold itself in there for hand threading. i got so mad, i used it to my advantage, put screws thru windshield, thru bag, into inserts, then when all where in like that, i popped the inserts into the hood, then tightened. makes yamahas rubber expanding machine nuts loook like gold.
for the bumper and skids, it is a Sheetmetal screw into raw aluminum, not even a self tapper!!! if this was made at yamaha, it would have machine screws with ALLEN heads, and the holes would either be tapped, rivnuts, or clipped to provide machine threads.
thank god i got the extended warranty from powersurge!

Dave there are a bunch of us in your back yard always going to The UP you can hook up anytime. I can fit 5 sleds in my rig. 3.5 hrs there and riding. Went Monday morning and I just came back Wednesday. Sometimes I just go for the day. It does not look good here for at least another week or more.
