At the end of the season this past year my starter stopped working. So this summer I took my sled completely apart and got the starter out. Now with the starter out and taken apart I found that one of the magnets let go and the starter is junk. So I'm looking for a new starter but I don't know what one to get. If you could give me some insight on what one to get that would be greatly appreciated.

I've got some good used yamaha starters here for $125. Have one from a 315 mile sled. Looking at $12 to ship.

But I could get a brand new one for $80 and a one year warranty. I just don't know if its worth it.

Just curious who sells new starters for $80. Kimpex carries aftermarket starters and I can't even get one at cost for $80.

There's no pull rope on a 4 stroke, so whatever you do make sure you get something you can trust. If it were my sled I would put a used yamaha starter in before I bought a cheap aftermarket.

It's made by DB Electric.

I don't think I could trust it because the OEM starter is around $350. I really don't want to have to rip apart my sled mid-season to change another bad starter. If you think that a used OEM one is the way to go. Then I may just do that.

I was just wondering if anyone has used an aftermarket one and had good luck with it. I didn't mean to upset you if I have.

No offense taken. No worries.

Perhaps others will chime in on some aftermarket starter experiences. Typically on critical electrical components yamaha quality is definitely superior to the aftermarket offerings. If the starters were easily accessible and there was a pull start back up I'd say give the $80 starter a shot, however that is not the case. If you decide you want a low mileage used one get in contact with me and I will get you fixed up.

Yeah I'm thinking I'd trust an OEM starter to go another 8,000 miles before an aftermarket one.

Go with the after market starter...if the OEM was so good why is mine go at 1100 miles? I can coach anyone with any amount of mechanical ability through a starter replacement in less than 2 hours...alone. I'm using the DB Electric starter now and have 800 miles on it. The smart money would be to change your starter relay every couple years and not get stuck on the woods or kill a trip.

I already have the old one out. I just didn't know what to get as a replacement. Because there isn't much of anything for reviews on any starter.

I would vote for used starter from Barn of Parts (hibshman) and a brand new rely that won't stick closed and cause most of the starter issues seen on T.Y.
replace relay every two years.
I see you are from Antigo WI - you could also get the starter from a little closer used parts supplier like Art's Parts in Cornell (715) 288-6863.

I've had no problem with the DB starter, I wouldn't use any used parts but that's just me

the after market cheap starters have a lot of bad reviews on this site I have read a bunch of them. the main issue with the nytro is the relay sticks and the starter stays engaged and gets so hot that the glue comes undone on the magenets and they shift and crack and destroy the whole starter so if it were me and it was a few years ago I would get that low millage used one from Travis at BOP as i did when i needed one and it lasted me for the rest of the time we owned the sled about 4000 miles before we sold it I bet it is still going strong. but first fix the problem change the relay and there is also a kit you can put in the seld that lights a small light when starter relay sticks so you can shut it down before the starter gets toasted. I just cant think of what it is called right now. but the aftermarket for electrical on thease sleds is full of issues with quallity nothing against Rob Warrior sounds like he got a good one so far but 800 miles is a weekend trip for me and I dont like to fix sleds just to ride them during the season that is why I bought yamaha and is why genuine yamaha parts go into it.also travis is a stand up guy and I have dealt with him 3-4 times now and he is my go to parts guy first because he has treated me very well over the years. in fact when we needed the starter we were up in northern wi on a trip and he got the part up to us to save the rest of the trip.

Ya I put on 2000 miles last year and 4000 in the last two so I want something that's gonna last.

I've talked to Travis and am more than likely going to buy a starter from him. I would trust the OEM starter to make me 2000 miles in one season over any aftermarket one.
