Oil behind stator cover?

Had the crank position sensor code being thrown.
Took the stator cover off to replace, and there is a bit of oil behind the cover. Enough to have a film all over the stator and sensor.

Should there be any oil behind there? I'm thinking not, but when I pulled the bolt out of the crank, a bit more oil came out (not a lot, but it did drip out), so I wonder just over the years if the oil has been dripping from there is normal.
Or is the crank seal done?

MT .man, how much is normal? Is there anything that should be checked or done before putting in the new stator and sensor?

the sensor was coated with oil, which is why we think it was not functioning properly, and giving us the code 12. We held off putting it back together until we did a little more research.

before I hit the snow this year, I may pull my cover off and see what it looks like behind there and maybe clean out the oil before it does any damage.

Any stator (Yamaha) that I have changed that has the rotor spinning inside the stator with the stator screwed to the out side cover has oil inside the cover. Not so much that it pours out on the floor but always a couple of oz. I changed the stator on my 06 Apex ( code 12 ) and it had oil in there , dont sweat that. Be more concerned on putting the stator and wires back correctly . And be prepared to have the magnets in the rotor pull the cover right out of your hands when trying to line up the gasket and cover during reassembly. Try to have clean hands with no oil residue. not that bad of job really, good luck

Another question...the three wires that go to the plug, they aren't color coded from what I can see.
Any idea if it matters how they connect to the plug if the wires are cut?

I have an aftermarket stator and I need the plug.

oil behind stator cover

You will always have some oil behind the stature cover. If you look through the hole in the block behind the cover you can see connecting rods. The oil gets in from there.

Follow up for others reading this post. Spoke to dealer mechanic about this. Stator is bathed in oil for cooling purposes. This is normal.
