After a few cocktails with the Yamaha Dealer and his crew the other day, we started talking about weather it was better to change oil, and then fog the engine for storage, or vice/versa?

My thoughts are to change the oil first, and then run the fog through. If the fog oil mixes with the regular oil, it might not be that big of a deal.

Also, do most of you guys fog while idling, or pull the plugs? The dealer says to do while idling so it dispurses through the engine better. Anybody???

What's the consensus here? I need to change mine soon, and get it ready for storage.
I know its not like prepping the Space Shuttle, but the saga continues....

put it away and change engine oil in the fall...

If you do this you let it sit in acidic oil for the summer and also allows the particulate that can get through a filter to settle. When you finally get to changing your oil the settled stuff gets kicked up and right back in your new oil. Change it in the spring and forget about it till the next spring.

I will definately change oil now, but I don't know if the fog oil will affect the new oil. I think I will change the oil first, and then let the new oil circulate through the engine while fogging.

Fogging oil shouldn't be mixing with engine oil in the first place on a 4 stroke, unless there is a ring sealing problem

Change the oil first then fog the engine idling and shut it down. Then pull the plugs and fog each cylinder to assure a complete coating of the cylinders. Turn over the engine (do not start it up) to evenly distribute the oil in the cylinders. Not enough fogging oil will make it past the rings into the oil. The little bit that may will be minimal.

That's basically what I am trying to figure out. YOu would think that anything sitting in the cylinders all summer would eventually seep past the rings. My main question is if the fogging oil is enough of an oil, or is there a larger quantity of solvents in it that may break the oil down faster. (like a carb cleaner...)

fogging or no fogging imo there isnt much difference, its the same as a car, when i store my camaro for 6 months i dont pull all 8 plugs and pour oil in the cylinders, ive had that car for 20 years now and always stored it without fogging,i just start it once in the winter and that's it,still runs the same and dont burn oil, same with my warrior,i start it every month and let it idle for 10 min and all is fine, sometimes my oil is only about 1000 miles old so dont feel like changing it for nothin when that oil still has alot of life.my dad leaves for florida every year and sometimes for 3 - 4 months at a time,he doesnt fog his truck and car etc...all im sayin is that its not as critical as a 2 stroke but that's only my opinion :4STroke: :4STroke:

I've been using SEAFOAM in my gas for the last 2 years, it does 2 things at the same time first it stabalizes my gas and acts as a ANTI- COROSION.

You can also get it in a spray can and feed it threw the intake if you prefer...

For the oil I was told if you used a good quality SYNTHETIC it will NOT break down or harm your motor, AMSOIL told me not to worry on oil with low milage, they even went as far as, I could run my oil for 10k plus, just change your filter once a year, that part I'm not SURE!!! I'd rather change it in the spring with a fresh filter...

I'm not a big fan on fogging a 4 stroke, just use SEAFOAM in your gas and let run for 10-15 min.

The other thing is where do you store your sled makes a HUGE difference, I always store mine in a insulated well ventilated garage so that temperatures don't get extremely HOT! that is where a lot of guys create problems whith moisture and condensation = RUST/COROSION

I see a lot of sleds sitting in peoples back yards in small shelters or some leave them in trailers, this spells DISASTER, also be very careful for the little criters looking for free rent! (MICE/SQUIRELS)

I have always left mine in an enclosed trailer in the hot sun of Southern Alberta and not a problem. Known to get into the high 30's and cools down lots at night like a desert. We are semi arid climate here so if hot and cold is going cause problems I would of seen it. Nope sorry nothing like that but I do start mine once a month and I put a few moth balls around the sleds really stinks that stuff.
