I'm sure Allen (srxspec) has already taken this phazer apart, he'll come up with a re-location kit
Just came in from 3 hrs of frustration, trying to change oil & filter. What a joke - I think I've just about disassembled the whole machine. I'd hate to see what the dealer is charging for this job.
I started with what should have been the easy part -- draining the old oil. I don't see why everything has to be an allen head. Try to remove the oil drain bolt (6mm allen) & it's tight as hell. Try a 20" cheater on my allen wrench - the wrench is torquing 45 degrees with the force-still won't budge. Grind off a 1" piece of allen wrench, put it in a 6mm socket, and put my Makita impact driver to it - no luck. The thing develops 100+ ft/lbs & won't break it loose. So I grab the map gas torch, heat it up good, quench the bolt & give it a try with a 18" breaker bar - SNAP... the craftsman 6mm socket busts in 1/2. What the hell. Grab a new socket, heat it up some more, then back to the impact driver & what do you know - it finally spins free! This was supposed to be like 22 ft/lbs. Try the oil tank drain BOLT - no problem. Going to need a new oil drain allen, I wouldn't trust this one again - starting to get sloppy.
Now, it's off to the oil filter.
Try to get my filter wrench on from above- NO WAY, won't fit. Squeeze it up from underneath, still won't go- not enough clearance on the side of the filter. Briefly try a channel lock - NO WAY, don't want to screw up the filter, and not enough room to turn wrench anway. I give up. Time for a stiff drink & a run to the hardware store tomorrow. See if they have a thinner (and shorter) filter wrench or maybe a strap type. I hope the guy that put in my filter wasn't the same one that tightened the drain allen.
On the bright side, I've seen where the spark plugs are now. Just hope I never have to change one

I'm smiling now knowing I'm not the only one perplexed with the complexity of an oil and filter change. This is like my 15th sled, and I worked on them all. I run and repair heavy eqiupment for 20 years, Never on anything have I had such a hard time doing an oil change. I bought a pair of "strap wrenches" at sears yesterday in anticapation for the next round. On the bright side, I think next time will go much quicker knowing what I've learned. Did you happen to check your front motor mount bolts? Mine had unscrewed itself and was just in the bore.
I'm on my way out the door for a strap wrench - I was going to the auto store first, but may end up at Sears. I too have been working on engines large & small for 20+ years and can't ever remember being so frustrated by something.
My motor mounts are tight, did you try removing the sending unit left of the filter for more room?
Also, found this part in the belly pan when I opened it up. Can't find it on any Micro-fich - any idea where it's from? 7/8" long by 5/16" wide.

I Didn't remove the sensor from the block but I did remove the wire disconect from the sensor to get it out of the way and also moved the idle speed adjustment thing to get more working room. Didn't remove it just poped it free from it's holding "fork" and moved it. I don't know about the thing you found in the pan. If it has threads inside, maybe it is like a nut they press into some of the plastic components. Good luck.BTW it took allot of force with the channel locks to get the filter free. The o-ring on the filter stayed stuck to the block like it was stupperglued.yamy07 said:I'm on my way out the door for a strap wrench - I was going to the auto store first, but may end up at Sears. yamy07, does that have threds on the other side. I was looking on yamaha parts. Phazer - brake - #16 nut. There is 2-3 more things that looks like that, but the threds go all the way threw.
No treads at all - just a hollow tube. Also found a rubber grommet in the clutch side bottom panel. Extra parts are never good.
Got a thinner oil filter wrench from auto parts store- can get it on the filter now, but no room to get a 3/8 drive socket in there. Bought a strap style one also, but will have to cut it down about 3" before I can try it.

The rubber grommet might be off the black plastic above your light. Mine poped off, they that them up side doun. The only thing that I see in the parts that have a smooth bore and looks like that is in the valves. I think it is a retainer. I don't know why that would be out side the motor. I'm thinking these phazer's were asembled in the US, and not Japan.

amused myself tonight to try to get at the oil filter the easiest way.
1.both side pannels removed
2.remove headlight cover(snapped on)might want to unscrew 2 bottom windsheild screws to get cover out without scratching it.
3.remove headlight pod(3 screws&remove wiring)
4.remove left hand upper cover
5.remove air box(remove 2 rubber plugs to see 2 allen bolts, third bolt underneath by air filter, then 3 electrical connection with 2 small hoses just underneath those connection, then one hose under air box.go to oil tank and remove large gray hose that connects to the tank, wont leak.pull gently to the side by leaving it hang by one more hose that dont need to be removed.you will then see the filter.might be fun to remove the filter.
looks worst than it is to me.now that ive done it,gonna be much faster when i do change the oil.had fun doing it.good luck

use a sears "strap wrench", get the idle speed adjuster and wire to oil preasure or whatever sensor by the filter out of the way. have rags handy, go for it!!
