Dont forget guys sometimes the oil filter seal will stay stuck on the engine when the filter comes off. Check for this and dont forget or you could blow your engine if you lose all your oil by putting another filter over top the seal thats stuck there.

I read this entire thread because I plan on doing my own oil filter change in the near future. And after reading the tread I decided to check my Yamaha Service Manual (8GC-28197-10) to see what it had to say on the topic of oil and filter changes. As it turns out Yamaha does make a filter tool (90890-01469, YM-01469). It's a cap-type filter tool, one that looks like you can use with a big cresent wrench.
Also the manual describes four 'oil filter bolts' that suround the filter that need to be removed, and I don't recall any description of this in the tread.
Lastly, I believe the Phazer uses a different filter than the RX1/Apex, so a filter relocation kit made for an RX1/Apex probably will not work without some modification.

With the talk of a filter relocation kit, any thoughts
on a oil drain plug relocation.. if possible? Like
and extension tube to somewhere, better?

I got a look at the service manual at my Dealer, the " four bolts around the filter" you are referring to are four Allen bolts that hold on (what the book calls) the "oil cooler". It is slightly above & to the left of the oil filter as viewed from the front. I was wondering about removing it when I changed my filter, but didn't want to take off something that might have a seal or gasket on it. But, thats what the manual says to do - And it would give you some much needed room to work. Book calls for 7.2 fl/lbs on the oil cooler allens & 12 ft/lbs on the oil filter on re-install.

I'm no yamy expert but I can't see a reason to remove the oil cooler unless somehow the oil in it doesn't drain when you drain the motor. It might give you a little room thou? I don't have the manual I just took it apart and drained the motor and tank and filter. Never took a oil cooler off during an oil change but this is my first 4 stroke sled. Thanks for the post. Next time I do the change I might pull it off to see if theres more oil in there and get the extra room.
