I get it that the filter doesn't hold a lot of oil but have you ever noticed how much more oil comes out of the engine when you remove the filter??
Also, if you have the money and don't mind wasting it then carry on, but personally I'll continue to purchase Hi-Flo or Wix filters which are half the price of Yamaha filters and are probably the same filter anyways as the last time I checked, Yamaha was not in the oil and filter business?
(Been told by more than one reliable source that Hi-Flo makes filters for a host of manu's, including Yamaha)
not in the oil business? are you forgetting about their highly developed line of YAMALUBE products?

Yes, Yamalube is Yamaha's oil but I can tell you they didn't refine it themselves, they had another oil manu make it for them and from what I heard, it is no different or is anything more special than what you can buy at most auto stores. (Citgo I believe?)
I remember reading (either here or on bobistheoilguy.com) that someone did a UOA (used oil analysis) and found that it was basically spent, or used up after 600-1000 miles.
Not the type of oil I want, especially at $22+ a litre for it here in Canada

thats probably true but $22!?!? im in nl "CANADA" and here stuff us ussually way more expensive and its only $7 a litre.($12 for full.syn.). and i like the thought that the oil was refined just for my machine. and the proof of that is from looking at hiw clean my engine is so far.

1. I use Shell Rotella T5 full synth TRUCK oil. Good reviews and analysis by others in motorcycles.
2. Use K&N oil filter. It's a good filter and love that nut on the end.
That Yamaha filter is the funkiest thing I have ever seen. And they compared it to a Fram? Really? C'mon! Compare it to a real filter like the K&N, Amsoil or even Wix. I didn't even see any kind of bypass on that filter. The two Yamaha filters I took apart didn't even look like that one, just a regular pleated cellulose media and it did have a bypass and seemed to have been built by Denso. I would think that the weird media they have in the video would have less surface area than a pleated type and looks more likely to clog.
I'm anal with everything dealing with my oil for all my vehicles. Been using synthetic oil for over 20 years. As soon as I saw what Fram was made of, dumped them quick (thanks to Youtube). I stick magnets to the filters to catch that little bit of tiny metal particles that no filter can catch. I also change my filter each time I change the oil. I have never seen any other vehicle manufacturer recommend to not change it each time. Doesn't make sense.

Well, either you have a great dealer who isn't gouging you or Yamaha has lowered it's prices the last couple years?
When I first purchased my sled (used) 2 yrs ago, the previous owner said he used Yamalube and Yamaha filters so I thought I would continued with that for my first oil change too.
When I went to my dealer and purchased 3 ltr's of full synthetic and a Yamaha filter I was blown away at the cost!! It was over $90.00 dollars tx's in
Since then I did some reading on here and bitog.com and found out there were lots of peeps who ran different oils/filters and never had any issues in thousands of miles.
I read reports and what some engine builders were using and I chose Mobil-1 Full syn European formula 0W-40.
It has lots of ZDDP in it which is important imo and the UOA's were fantastic, leaps and bounds better than Yamalube and I can get it for half the cost of what Yamaha charges for their oil.
I could only find this as far as prices go, and keep in mind it is in U.S. dollars so if your dealer is only charging $7 and $12, then continue to support him.

Here's some food for thought. A partialy cloged filter is a better filter than a brand new one. Remember the filters have enough suface area in them that partly cloged at one oil change doesn't cause a flow restriction.

Where in god's name did you hear that??
With that analogy, a fully clogged filter must be the cat's azz then

Belive it or not I head this at a service school I was at. I always though it was an interesting concept. The thought train behind it is that is you have a 10 micron filter and the filter is restricted to say 8 microns you now have in effect a finer filter. With the amount of surface area built into filters rate of flow does not change most likley till the filter is 50% plugged down to 5 microns. I have a catapillar road grader at work that also recomends an oil change a 250 hrs and an oil and filter change at 500 hrs. The same idea as yamaha's every other change idea. In todays automotive world one of the bigest wastes of petrolum is changing oil to soon. In the automotive fleet I maintain we service gas vehicles at 4000 miles and diesil vehicles at 6000 miles. You should note I'm not talking about any fully pluged filters here.
