On a recent little ride in the hills I had to take a snowbank at a weird angle that caused the VL to tip quit a bit to the right but not on its side and I didn't lose control but I noticed that it kind of backfired/gurgled. The VL worked fine and I went for another 20km without smelling or seeing any oil. The next morning I was surprised and worried to see that there was oil underneath the sled on my trailer. I looked in the airbox and there was oil in there and the filter was soaked so I cleaned it up the best I could and checked the oil level and it was in the range so I rode for two more days without an issue.

Is it normal to lose oil like that without fully tipping on the side?

Is there any fix for that issue?

How do you top up the oil on these machines?

Thanks,

I had oil in my air box pretty regular even without tipping it over. There is a rollover valve on here somwhere you can buy it will close that tube off in the even it tips. I rerouted the breather tube off the top off the oil tank up to the riser with a filter on top and have not had another issue. As far as how to top off the oil right side panel open and fill it through the dipstick hole! You might want to check your chain case oil too as they are known for leaking. :jump:

If the Venture is the same as the RX1 you should remove the electrical plug on the oil dipstick before twisting it out to prevent damage.

Thanks, I didn't see anything like that, must be there for an electronic gauge?

Thanks for the info. That is an interesting fix you did. Have you posted any pics and instructions? What type of filter did you use?

Thanks,

Ok here ya go it's pretty simple, I had to cut the plastic a bit by the riser so the tube has room to move back and forth with the steering. I forgot to look but I might still have the K&N package with part number but any parts store should be able to order you one! I think I used 5/8" I.D tubing but double check me by measuring as it was last year when I did this mod! So the pics, ask if you have any other?????? OH ya I found this rubber plug to cover the hole in the air box as the tube inside is gone and the hole is above the filtration! hope this helps you guys out!

Thanks for the info and pics; I'm trying to get a picture of this. So you just pulled the tube out of the airbox and closed the hole? Was the hose long enough to reroute to the riser or did you have to join a piece? And, the filter fits inside the hose? Is that a filter like one that would go on the end of a fuel line?

Thanks,

Yes I pulled tube out of airbox and closed the hole. I got new rubber line and ran it from top of oil tank up to riser and added a K&N mini air filter they use these on valve covers and small engines it is washable I have never had an issue in 2000 miles with this mod, the tube fit inside the bottom of the air filter then I added a clamp. Some people have said they would worry it might freeze but like I said 2000+ miles and no issue. If you roll over on side i have never had oil come out upside down might be a diffrent story but I got really tired of cleaning the airbox. Hop this helps

Mine was FULL of oil and leaked ALOT after a it ended up upside down (one of the times) but (yep been upside down a FEW times) only had oil in there a couple times.
From just normal use (well not sure my use is normal...lol) theres still always a little oil in there...thats what the "crankcase breather system" does.

I agree a little oil does seem to accumulate even when not tipped over.
