My Dad went to start his sled up for the first time this winter, and noticed oil leaking from somewhere. Checked the chaincase, that was good, and the oil dipstick said it was good. Was wondering if the braided oil line from the resivor to the motor could be the culprit? Or the drain plug... obviously went to check the tightness on the plug, and it was tight, but there was oil on the bolt. Any ideas would help... 07 Apex 9000 miles. Thank you

I would check the tank. Take it out and look for cracks.

There are some good posts on here talking about this.

What side of the sled was the leak. Was it a large spot, take the top of the air box off and check for oil. Had the sled been on its left side.

if your sitting on the sled..... right side. The sled has never been tipped on purpose or accident. I will tell him to check the air box, but what will this tell me? Obviously I'm mechanically challenged, which is why I live on this site all winter!

Check the bottom of the oil tank they are will get cracks in them over time. Pull the right side cover and look for oil running down the inside. If you neeed a hand I'm only about 20mins from you.

APEX 06, Thanks for the offer, but the sled is "up north", I went up this morning to get mine and had to come home right away.... aahhh kids! I will tell him to check the bottom of the tank

Oil tank could be stripped out where you tighten the drain bolt. Happened on mine, the threads on the oil tank are very easy to cross thread. I would drain the oil into a clean container and check the oil plug and the tank. Also, make sure there is a copper gasket between the drain plug and the tank.

Where is up north? I live up north to most. sounds like the same story I have heard lots of times on here and it ends up being the cracked oil tank each time. lots of ways people have "fixed" it. if you know someone who can weld it or else replace it seem to be the best options. JB weld has been used too. best to drain and remove the tank and inspect it well.

up north is 20 miles north of Antigo, a little town of Elcho. He said the tank will be coming off this week,i'll let you know what the problem is. Thank you to everyone for all the info!

im about an hour south of there if you need help.

is it possible that its left over oil spillage from a previous oil filter change? filter changes make a huge mess unless you stuff a half a roll of rags down in there when removing the filter. just a possibility.
