Oh man...Different rings now?
IF I learn that the '05's don't have the oil problem I'll HATE Yamaha even more, and we KNOW they won't admit to anything in the engine dept. I'm not sure I really want to deal with anymore of Yamaha's F-Up's NORMAL or NOT. I'm just about done with this nightmare.
One oil change at recommended mileage. At 1800 miles I used 1 quart to 2600 miles. Saving-up for a pre-season oil change - or trade-in???
AGAIN, NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING. THANK YOU SOOO MUCH YAMAHA

No Oil burning, or lost on stick.
2,300 miles, and 300 of them are 1/4 mile asphalt runs. Leakdown is at 6%, and compression is perfect. This sled gets up to 235° and gets cooled down to 100 for the next run. Fires up immediatly, and runs great!
Using yamaha 4stoke CW oil.

One more thing...I'm thinking about drilling tiny holes in the dipstick so it will be easier to read.

Pistons and cylinders are all the same.
I wonder if there's anybody with the equipment and chance of looking inside the engines who could actually do a measure and compare between the different part numbers. I for one would really like to know what the difference is between the rings.
Just for you LB; Hope this answers some of your questions
*First off Yamaha Snowmobiles supplied to the U.S.A., CANADA and EUROPE many times have different part numbers as to show where those sleds are headed.
Model - H RX10 1 Is an 03/RX 1
- J RX10 1 Is an 04/RX 1 / - J RX10W Is an 04/Warrior
- K RX10 1 Is an 05/RX 1 / - K RX10W Is an 05/Warrior
These numbers might or might not match a U.S.A. OR EUROPIAN sled, as these are the CDN numbers right from the book.
RINGS;03/04
5LV-11603-00-00 This is the part number right out of the book for the RX-MOTORCYCLE.
- RINGS- Parts number for the rings is 11603
- PISTONS- Parts number for the pistons is 11601
- The parts number for SNOWMOBILES is "8FU"
- RINGS- Parts number for sled rings is 8FU-11603
- PISTONS- Parts number for sleds pistons is 8FU-11601
Normally MODEL & CODE number don't change unless they change VENDORS or SUPPLIERS or MATERIALS change.
I double checked YCN [Yamaha Comunications Network] for anything showing that, but their was nothing
Then I double checked Yamaha's NEWS BULLETIN for anything and came up with nothing on that as well.
I would have gladly used the micrometer and checked one for you but we don't have any around to check.
So basically both BIKE & SLED seem to use the same rings, even though those numbers are different.
I can tell you that I used a Accra-Bore tool this summer to measure all of the cylinder walls from top to bottom & the end gaps on all of my rings. Everthing was well within spec, these motors truly are as close to being bullet proof as they get.
LB Hope this helps shed some light on some of your concerns

I wonder how many A.C. owners were right when their was 13 recalls on their ZR's. And they still have issues
I wonder how many Polaris owners were right when their 900 fusions went back for new front axials & hose clamps on all of their fuel lines
I wonder how many Doo guys are right about their snow checked 1000's going back for new Cylinders, and what else down the road.
Yamaha sure has some issues to deal with, but so does everybody else. Some have worse issues to deal with than others. I think when Yamaha gets this skid problem worked they will have as close to a perfect sled as you are ever going to get.
I still think you need to play with the skid and get it set up to your own personal requirements, LB is excellent at helping set up skids. Maybe just maybe you have given up on yours just a little to quickly.
I know your frustrated and you probably feel like you wished you never bought your Yamaha, but I believe that just a little more patience with it and your likely to change your mind. Please feel free to PM me at anytime on any questions you have and I'll gladly help you any way I can.

04 Mountain 600 miles all in the you-pee, no oil consumption detected. Switching to mobil one after 1500 miles. Switched out antifreeze after finding near 100 per cent antifreeze and no water mix from factory, in both my sled and identical friends sled. Carbs were way to rich from factory and fouled out plugs til service by dealer, tho ran seemingly fine in October's warmer weather.
I agree that Yamaha is incred. poor at standing back of the sleds where design problems occur. Examples of design flaws such as heat exchanger being "included" in 05 models, but not an issue with "04" jobs is stupid. Of course I bought and added it to both sleds.
Point is that all manufacturers have problems. But do they stand back of the sleds once sold.
Own articats, with two recalls fixed by dealer...no cost.
Yamaha, no fuel shut-offs, carb heater shut-offs, and heat exchanger...not fixed by yamaha.
Needed replacement sled for vmax, so I bought polaris switchback to see how that works out. Done with yamaha, unless I buy used.
Not stuck on any one manufacturer, as I have now owned them all.
Seems all other manu's stand back of the new sleds except Yamaha. Not sure why??

Bountyhunter,
We both know that either one of the other 3 OEMS will stand behind their dealers and customers better than Yamaha. As I recall, most problems were/are fixed at their (OEM's) expense because they offer "recalls" not updates. I'd rather have my Polaris, Cat, or Doo go-back for a recalled cylinder or worse, than to have to argue with dealers, spend $thousands of dollars on "upgrades" and suffer through a season with a riding sled - all-of-which Yamaha has done. What was Yamaha's answer to the SRX's crank issue? Still no word on the W arm? I know that Cat went good on its f-cats, heck even Polaris gave me a new motor-plate for my Ultra and it was out-of-warranty.
After having experienced a near perfect sled in my EDGE, the RX-1 is a lemon. Having to spend $thousands on upgrades to fix factory short-falls (M-10, 136" extensions, track, new seat, straight-rate springs and longer torsion arms, to name a few), is not my idea of the perfect sled. Getting stuck with a lousy performing 2004 model sled is a nightmare. I suppose if Yamaha made the only pink snowmobile, they'd argue it was still innovative. So you tell me what part of "high-performance, four-stroke snowmobile" and "dependability and comfort for years to come." I don't get?
You're right, I did "give-up" on it right after the 3rd trip to the dealer for adjustments, the hours spent on the trail and in on a cold garage floor tinkering and adjusting, the 2nd broken center shock, the 1st. faded rear shock, the $350 spent on an Ohlins clicker - which has to be re-valved and/or resprung, the 1st. busted W-arm, after Yamaha declined to fix anything else on my sled and then send me a Y.E.S. offer in the mail. Can I "give-up" after I re-inforce the W-arm, or after something else breaks on it? According to Yamaha, nobody should be adjusting the suspension other than a certified technician at the dealership.
But my beef is not with you, TY, or other members , it's with Yamaha . I can't even write them a professional letter without venting my anger. I'm sick-and-tired of trying to get a decent ride out of it by adjusting crap and buying more crap. As for the oil consumption problem: It's being overshadowed by the suspension. Rings or no rings, it doesn't surprise me.
If anyone wants to help me, or take on my views and opinions of Yamaha, the OEM's or RX-1, PM me, this is not my thread.

Those 5LV Rings that are off a motorcycle, had some free time and decided to check this out futher and this is what I found.
The rings Yamaha is using now are 8FU- They are off of the FZ-1 Motorcycle. Yamaha is using those as they make more pressure in the cylinder. Just thought you might like to know

Ah.. then that makes lots of sense. The 8FU rings make more pressure than 5LV rings means that they seal better... which suggests that they are being used to reduce blow-by - overcome a deficiency in the older rings.

Jim, 2,600 miles on mine, not a drop of oil used. Broke in by the book. Changed the oil at 500 miles and again at 2,000. Went to Amsoil at 2,000. Very happy with the sled. I am going to the ECP kit this year. I will let you know when I have more miles on.

I'm rebuilding my '03 piece by piece from the ground up and would like to avoid any problems with my original rings. Can you please clarify? - 5LV is for the bike and is better because it makes a better seal? I'll post some pics of the project sled soon.
-05 seat, lighter battery, 44''arms, simmons flexi-ski, WK GP-1 etc...
Thanks,

I think I understand now, 8FU is the best, even better than 5LV.

They're ALL off motorcycle. The 8FU rings seal better and are what Yamaha is now using in RX1.
