Here is something that you don't see every day, open boards on stock RX tunnel.....

Although it is only partially complete, and it doesn't look professional, and other people with better skills and tools could make it nice - I think it will serve its purpose.

One project among MANY projects this summer, I will post the results of this and the rest of them when complete.

Although most seem to have given up on the old RX, I am not ready.

Looking really good!

The coolers are running on the outside - those looks like polaris coolers.

I would really like to so some more pics of your tunnel mod. Let us see a pic with the whole tunnel

The edges are the Fabcraft extrusions that they sell by the foot - I had to bend them to follow the tunnel kick-up. They were relatively cheap. I used the stock cooler mounted further back - again, because I am cheap.

I was trying to avoid taking more pics until I made more progress. I am shaping up some plastic to cover the old hose pass-through and what will be the new "trunk". But here is another of the back....

this is interesting....are you running front mount turbo or under-tunnell exhaust? Do you think you'll have enough cooling now?

Under-tunnel glasspack with CC baffle - I am doing the full Kachess treatment.

I AM concerned about cooling. My thumbnail calculations are that I have slightly more surface area than the stock RX had before installing the rear cooler. I had overheating issues before the rear cooler addition; but, I also had pure antifreeze at that time and did not check it until I installed the rear cooler. Additionally, although I think that these board edges will not catch as much snow as the stock board coolers, the rear cooler should do better mounted at the back of the tunnel extension.

My plan is to add Water-wetter to the proper coolant mix, install a temp gauge and homemade scratchers, and keep a close eye on it. If worse comes to worst I may have to add a U-cooler; at that point the undertaking leaves the realm of the "cheap".

If you never had scratchers before then that was likely your problem. They help cooling and hyfax wear quite a bit. What does Fabcraft charge per foot. I just bought basically the same cooler edge for my Nytro from Van Amburg and I think it was like $12 something a foot, I d have to look at the receipt.

I had scratchers but broke them. My new ones are thresher teeth (some kind of farming equipment tines) from John Deere that are monster heavy duty and I hope will hold up better. I am going to try them on the skis.

The extrusion was $8 per foot but I had them weld the nipples on so it cost me a little more.

bdm - Looking good :)

There's still a few of us not ready to abandon the ole' RX just yet. I'm not even half way done with mine LOL, TT's still working on his I believe, obr is working on his I know for sure. The RX's are still able to give the Apex's a run for their money.

BTW - I will turbo my RTX asap or when finances and wifey allows me :)

Thanks rxrider, I only had a trail sled before the RX - I don't have much to compare it to but I love it. I had such a great time last season, improving the sled and my skills, then I went crazy modding this summer. I won't ever be able to justify the cash for boost, but totally understand the thrill.

By the time that I hit the snow this season I will be down more than 80 lbs from stock (I weighed every little scrap that went on or off - it is fun to keep track), rider forward, open boards, light front and rear suspension, and lower center of gravity - what more could you ask? (oh yeah, boost)

I hope for even more fun than last season. I used to go out for 3 or 4 hours and be done - half a tank of gas left. Last year, with lighter sled, I was having so much fun that I would only come back when the gas was gone. The Mt. Addiction gas racks will be on the back this year and the outings will be based upon daylight instead of gas.

I told my wife way back in 2002 when I bought the RX-1 that I would keep it for life or until it dies. With the logevity of the engine and chassis my girls may have to ride the RX down the drag strip when they get old enough, in a 8-10 years time LOL, I may be able to have it ready for racing in time :)

Nice job!

I was even cheaper, I just drilled a bunch of spaced holes throughout my footboards (everywhere but over the coolers). It helps some but, it's not nearly as nice as your setup.

It's getting cool in the mornings. I stopped by our local dealer today to look at the 09 sleds but he only had a few Poos he'd just got in today.

Well, I am feeling pretty foolish. I was just flipping through the SLP catalog and they have Snow Eliminators for the RX listed. If I had known anybody (such as SE or F-Bomb) made them I gladly would have forked out the dollars for them and had a much nicer result. Oh well, more pride in making your own stuff.

Anyway, I made some progress on making the body plastics for the "trunk" and side. It is cheesier than I had hoped but still better than the frankenstein stitches and hose pass-through holes. I made them easy to remove using the stock screws so I can easily add my Seat Jack brackets in case I have a date.

a little more progress on the "trunk".....

I am amazed at how much that I can fit in there - rope, tool kit, jumper, nylon strap, first aid kit, flashlight, survival kit, and plugs... all of the stuff that I hope that I never need.

I called SLP today to ask about their snow eliminators. They didn't have any in stock but the gentleman I spoke to was kind enough to call the manufacturer and ask about how they are installed with the stock heat exchangers.

Apparently the stock heat exchangers are removed and the snow eliminators installed. Then you mount the stock heat exchangers directly over inside portion of the snow eliminators.

That sure sounds like one would be giving up a good portion of the benefits of the snow eliminators.

At this point, I think I'll pass but, I'm listening....................
