So I just bought A 2006 nytro really nice shape has 6300 miles on it. I have been reading about the bad cam chain tensioner and got worried and went and looked to see what colour the dot was on mine and it is the Orange dot of death once motor it warmed up there is a noise on the Chain side of the motor what's my next step ? Thanks

It's good to take clutch off crank when listening for timing chain noise. Also be sure it's not an exhaust leak.

Pretty sure there's a sticky thread on replacing the tensioner.

Back in 09 I had the noise on our 06 Rage's. Confirmed it was the tensioners with a mechanics stethoscope.
Grizztracks has a very good write up on how to change the tensioners.

Thanks guys. Is it safe to run with the clutch off ? I know my old 02 viper reved like crazy with the clutch off

Two stroke is different from four stroke. The four stroke will idle pretty much the same.

Awesome thanks

My yamaha dealer said it is not a wide spread issue he said he has never changed one

There is a definite difference between the normal clutch rattle and a failing tensioner noise. The clutch noise tends to be in sync with the engine rpm's and lessens with increased rpm's. The tensioner noise is erratic and more noticeable after warm up and slightly increased engine rpm. A cheap mechanics stethoscope will help pinpoint the noise. Due to the fact that a tensioner failure in a interference engine is normal catastrophic most of the replacements I've done were precautionary and only a few actually due to a failing tensioner. I've probably replaced more of these than any dealership but have not yet seen an actual failure although I've heard several reports of them failing and destroying the engine. Yamaha updated the tensioner and put out a service bulletin indicating that there is a potential for failure so if you're hearing any abnormal noise out of the stator side or valve train areas I'd replace the tensioner.

thanks for the info. You would think with my sled haveing 6300 miles on it, if it was going to go it would have by now

So I fired the sled up tonight and had a good listen there are no noises when you first start ist after it gets warm there is a noise almost sounds like a exhaust leak or loose rivet rattling gets loader with more rpm

Could be an exhaust clamp spinning on the header. With it running look down the tunnel above the track, with a light you can see through the bulkhead to see if the exhaust clamps are spinning on the pipe

My sons 2007 Nytro was same, I had dealer talk me out of doing the upgrade on tensioner, told me they had never done one and don't waste my time, well a month into winter and sled stalled during warm up (choked removed to soon), from then on it was a sow to get running cold and to keep running when cold. It had jumped time on one cam, I was lucky it didn't damage engine, but then I had to rip apart mid season (pain). I would change weather you hear anything or not. ( just my 2 cents)

Could I just take the valve cover off and see if the chain is loose ?

Could I just take the valve cover off and see if the chain is loose ?

No, it would be difficult to determine if there is a problem with only the valve cover off. There's also a guide in the top of the valve cover that helps prevent the chain from jumping the gears so rotating the engine without the cover or without tie straps holding the chain to the gears can result in it jumping time. Never rotate these engine in the reverse direction because that too can allow the chain to jump.

What's the best way to get the bottom bolt out of the tensioner ?
