Overheating Nytro Xtx 2011

I had some overheating issues last season were temp light would come on constantly even in great conditions. I run ice scratchers on the rails and added ski scratchers and no dice. Sled doesn't have tunnel cooler so hoping that's most of the issue. I want to cover all bases before the season starts so wanted to see what you guys think about the parts I'm looking to replace if I'm going overkill or not.

I plan on flushing coolant and replace with new when I add the mtx cooler. People have suggested 60/40 ratio and some have suggested also adding water wetter. Im thinking of replacing thermostat and temp sensor so curious if I should stay oem or get aftermarket sensor as I've heard many people have sensitive sensors in these sleds? If the problem continues I will be looking for suggestions on what everyone is running for digital temp read outs.

Last but not least will these sleds stutter out if your going down the trail and its actually overheating and not just a bad sensor? I have a friend that's a Yamaha nut and he swears if it was actually a issue it would stop the sled before it ruined anything...? I don't trust that so I havent pushed it.

Could be a bad sensor, could be the fan is not running on the radiator and could be air in the system. It help to actually just have the fan run at all times and you can do that with a relay and splice into the wires going to the fan with key one from ignition or just an additional on off switch..do this all the time on Boosted Vipers.
 
Was thinking of doing a manual switch for the fan but it does kick on I forgot to mention that in the post. Do you have any experience replacing the temp sensor with a aftermarket sensor over oem?

I have not, but I have seen both after market and stock pick-ups for temp fail. I dont think any is any better then the next.

Alright good to know so would you say it would makes more sense to get the cheaper of the 2 on the sensor and thermostat?
 
Would you suggest one thermostat & sensor over the other? Or go for the cheaper option for both?
 
Thanks for the advice. Would you do 60/40 on the antifreeze mix and would you add water wetter to it? Any suggested coolant that these motors like more than another?
 
Back when I got my 2009 xtx, I installed the yamaha mountain cooler, digital temperature guage from Ulmer, and scratchers on the rails. No problems, runs 165 degrees fahrenheit 98 percent of the time and that's with a 1.75 track. Obviously they don't like idling for any length of time, or icy trails or icy lakes, but the temp guage is perfect because you know exactly how your engine is reacting to all conditions. You can just check your coolant with an antifreeze coolant tester to make sure it is not 100 percent antifreeze. My guess is your sensor and thermostat are likely fine, unless this is a high mileage sled. Big motor, big heat.

A lot of good advice from MrSled. Per his notes I would check all this off your list - verify the temp sensor is good, verify the fans are turning on, and flush the coolant.

I've ran my sled with a 1.75" track for almost 6 years and have only seen the temp light come on a few different times running trails/road sides with very poor snow conditions for a good stretch. The only goodies I have that may help are a Mountaintech IP vent kit (installed by previous owner - https://www.mountaintechindustries.com/#mountaintechipventwithipgagemount) and recently added WRP panel/hood vents for extra air flow.
 
Did you test the strength of your antifreeze? Just switching this out may be all you need. Higher concentration of antifreeze hinders cooling efficiency.

I personally would opt for my dual fan kit vs a mt cooler. Dual fan is still effective when sitting still and running roads with no snow.
 
I run the dual fan set up from Travis at BOP and have never had the idiot light come on. I tour a lot all around Ontario which pretty much guarantees lots of low snow/road riding these days. The piece of mind has been worth the price of admission.
 
I thought all XTX models had the MTX cooler? Or was that only on later models? My 14 came with it and I'm pretty sure my 12 had it factory.
