Overheating?

was out riding my sled...and yeah it was warm out, 40F-45F would be my guess.

my cousins phazer never overheated once, but my Nytro overheated like 4x and i had to keep stopping?

any idea's as to why, or solutions?

Check coolent mixture. See what temp it's good for. If your good to -45 or more add some distiled water to get the mix to more reasonable temp. Meaning if you will never see anything colder than -25 in your area then maybe -35 is what you should mix to. They ship the sleds with 90 to 100% coolent to be on the safe side of freeze-up. Do a search and you will problably find more than you wish. Also if your still breaking in the motor, less than 500 miles, it will improve on it's own.

EDIT: Got beaten to it. Darn you Got APEX! ;)!

Did you keep putting it in snow? I know mine after sitting the other day, trail side just chatting, gave me a temp warning on start up. I just puttered into some pow pow (powder) and the light went out after maybe 20 feet. Some are reporting their coolent is not the right mixture, might also be your problem. Anyone have the details of that one?

Its just a small heat exchanger and a radiator cooling so powder is a must. Not a problem for me as thats what I like to play in, but sometimes its all packed. Hope this helps.

Are we supposed to be running some special mixture of coolant. I put a standard 50/50 Pre-mix in mine and it ran fine on a 70 mile day in waist deep mountain riding at 15-20 degrees.

yeah, that was my first thought, going to check/flush system and put a better mix in and go from there.

hoping this is the problem, along with the fact that its only at 200miles and maybe still running a bit hot from break in but...i really find that hard to believe.

running into snow is an old habit from riding tunnel cooled snowmobiles so yeah i was doing that, since there is still small radiator up there.

Yamaha snowmobiles now come with ethylene glycol silicate free coolant.
Extended life coolant.
Common specific gravity floating ball type testers might not indicate correct coolant ratio.
Refractor type testers are more accurate to measure the coolant to water ratio.
Supposed to come at 60/40 coolant to water ratio and is supposed to be good to -62 F.
50/50 supposed to be good to -34 F.

In 33 F temp going slow (5-10 mph) while crossing through a village then slow through some trees the light came on but once I sped up and got into some better snow the light went off.

Is the electric fans on these kicking on and or possibly waiting to long to turn on? The only time I had my templight come on was when I let it sit and idle for approx 7-10 min and as soon as I took off (in good/soft snow), it went right away. I dont remember hearing my fan or feeling it blow warm air while it was sitting there?? Just a thought.....

Did your fan come on? If not, check the fuse.

Had my overheat light come on 5 or 6 times yesterday, each time all I had to do was pull off the trail & punch it in some powder and the light went off. This is the first time(s) it's overheated. You could feel the fan blowing lots of warm air out. I have about 600 miles on, only thing new yesterday - the trails had lots of snirt from the warm weekend. My Phazer with the fan kit did not overheat once on the same ride. Anyone tried the MTX tunnel cooler?

My fan was on, it was the first thing i checked.

was no deep powder to pull into where my sled was overheating, half the problem right there...just what was on the trail, slushy snirt, was fine when i was on the windy trails that were protected from the sun.

I always worry once that light comes on, I dont suppose our machines have automatic shutdowns? how do we know if we have the time to go 200 yards and into some powder vs stopping right away to prevent complete heat seizure?

my experience was like yours, mine overheated, cousins phazer was fine.

Yamaha has done this antifreeze thing for years .you need to make a ratio with water ,you can also add watter wetter it's been debated on TY before but it does help your cooling system be more efficient. Ive never had light come on when usng water and water wetter. not expensive and every little thing you do is one less headache.

It'll shut down when it gets too hot.

THIS IS ONLY TRUE WHEN SLEDS IS AT AN IDLE!!!

(Yes I was yelling!
I know this first hand :o| )

I know this first hand too, but why wouldn't it shut down beyond idle for self preservation?

So then it would also shut down when it gets too hot on the trail....meltdown?
