p1338 engine code safe to run?

LTX Base here.... I have 350 miles and have never had a starting issue with my Viper.

I turn the key to on and after I hear the fuel pump pressurize and then turn the rest of the way to start it. After the engine turns over 2-3 times it starts every time no matter how hot or cold the engine temp is. I'm not superstitious at all but I'm about to go knock on some wood! lol

I've gotten this error/alarm on two occasions. Just came back from a long run on my 2014 Viper XTX-SE..150k, trail running, played in some powder for about an hour..no issues. At the end of the run I shut the machine down for about 5min. and had trouble..again..starting it up. The alarm code " P1338" came up for the third time followed closely by another code "P1339" (Crankcase tooth not detected")...I've not rolled my sled so not sure if that has anything to do with the codes appearing..IMO...

WHAT GIVES YAMAHA????

On Chris Reed's blog he tells someone in the comments that he is sure Arctic Cat is looking into it??? So much for Yamaha.

Well, sounds like you guys got off lucky. I had a great ride going today and the sled just quit going about 60 mph. Turned the key off and tried to get it going again and code 1338 came up. The bad news for me was it never turned back over. Somewhat embarrassing I had to be towed by my nephews rage. I get it to the trailer load it, take it to the dealer and they tear it apart to find out the fuel pump is not working. Sounds like this 1338 code is a general code. I will keep you posted but it is definitely electronic.

Just got the call from the dealer. Ground wire to the fuel pump broke. Might want to check those out if you are riding rough trails. Did 150 on pretty good trailed and 70 today on extremely rough trails. I do have to say. I have been waiting for this type of handling for a while.

Riding all day having a blast and last start of day took a couple of extra cranks and on way home started flashing p1339 code runs perfectly should it run bad if there was a bad tooth on crank or just ghost that need to be dealt with. Most fun sled I have ever owned though this would be the one to give me trouble

Mine did that one time at about 150 miles and then never again. P1338 then P1339 shut it off and restarted codes gone

Had it a couple times, just turning the key off and letting the fuel pump cycle seems to work for me.

got the 1338 code today, it was the second time i have had the hot start issue, i think it may be a low volt thing, got the code after running the bat low,

I've got a 2014 SR Viper XTX SE.

I just got the P1338 and P1339 this past weekend with about 1000 miles on it. The sled was warm and we had just shut them down after some boondocking.

When I went to re-start it, it cranked and started to fire but didn't fully start when I released the key. Cranked it again and the codes came up. Drove about a mile and got the group to stop then shut it down and it was a hard re-start (around 10 - 15 sec. cranking until it fired) and the code cleared.

Performance seems to be normal with no obvious misfire or sluggish behavior like it's running rich. It happened one more time after that on the same ride, seems to coinside with early release of the key on the first start attempt. I hope to get one more ride in this year then off to the dealer for an inspection on these codes, the warranty should cover this, correct? Whether or not there is anything physically wrong or it needs an updated ECU flash which may not be out yet at least Yamaha / Arctic Cat will have another report to add to their quality discussions which I truly hope they're having weekly.

The P1338 error code was on my list of questions when i talked to a Yamaha District Service manager last night at a local sled show. He said a P1338 is always a battery issue. He said check battery and ensure battery connections are tight.

Don't shoot the messenger, that is what he said.

I had more hope for a solution than that. I guess they are just grasping at straws still. That must mean the '15s will still have the same issues if they can't identify what's wrong.

I just bought my 14 XTX SE as a non current leftover. I know my dealer personally, and we talked for 4-5 hours about this new model and the most popular issues that have came up. He to states that this P1338 code is low-voltage related, and told me that the whole electrical system, is extremely sensitive to loss of voltage. He also demonstrated to me how, in his words, " the viper just doesn't like to be started/stopped repeatedly in short bursts. The viper beside me, he fired up then shut off immediately. He waited a few moments and fired it up again ( took a few seconds longer this time) and let it run for a while. He then started and stopped it quickly back to back twice, and I could clearly see it struggling to start more and more with each attempt. At first i thought this may have been related to insufficient programming between the ECU, fuel pimp, and injectors.... OR..... simply just poorly set up batteries from the factory. Maybe lack of charging on the dealers end. With the electronics on our vipers being primarily cat, but realistically a blend of both yamaha and cat ( our gauges are yamaha, thats electronics in my books) I'm to wonder if perhaps its just as simple as the electrical system having a fault somewhere between the battery and the ECU, therefore throwing all these codes. Simple fix, but identifying seems to be the issue. On the other hand, this roll over issue needs to get set straight. The only time I ever do anything but boondock/sidehill is when I'm on a trail etc that takes me to such area. I bought the viper for famous yamaha quality/durability that we've all come to know, and the ability this chassis has to perform in these types of riding. What in heck is the point of a 144" "crossover" snowmobile if it can't be ridden on its side? I can understand when they're rolled complete over on there backs and left running, or left on there side running with no movement. But dimple carving and sidehilling should not have any negative effect on this machine for its entire lifespan. If not, we've all got a serious problem

viiper - I'm not trying to see how many likes I can get on this post....but can tell you that everyone that was buying a Viper was curious to see if the Arctic Cat/Yamaha combo would work. I was worried too at first, but since test riding the protypes and now owning one which I call the best sled I've ever owned.....I don't think you will be disappointed. I do 60% boondocking and 40% trail now and can tell you I only had 1 time where the engine oil went into the intake from having it upside down. Otherwise I have had my Viper every which way from on it's side to flagpoling (straight up and down) with 0 problems. You will love the XTX 141 inch!

X2 Nos -after being upside down several times and at least 5 times on its side and now with all that boost on its tail every time I ride it I have never had any issues other than having to pop off the breather hose to get it to re-prime. I have written here before that I like that time to get my wits back and let the underwear dry out prior to shoving off again anyhow.

I have documented my problems on TY with mine but all but several issues were a result of adding the turbo. I am still learning to ride mine off trail cause it is so diff than the pro r's that you can lay over by just standing on the oposite running board. I did have the pleasure late last season to watch a guy on mine that has years of experience riding with Bondourant out west and what he did with my sled was amazing. (i wish I had my contour camera rolling.)

I am looking forward to this year just gritting my teeth and burrying the throttle and let her fly in the deep and steep stuff.
