Parking Brake bolt replacement

Last weekend while starting to change out by jack-shaft bearing I stripped the head of one of the parking brake mounting bolts (along with severing my tendent on one of my fingers - but that's a whole different story...).
I read in a previous post that a replacement bolt was $20, which I though was a joke, until I looked it up at $18.80 US!
It looks like the bolt is just a M6 50mm bolt with a flat head?
Could one just sub in a standard M6 50mm bolt with a washer?

I've got a M6 40mm and M6 65mm bolt, which are too short/long though their shaft diameter is 5.88mm, while the stock bolt is 5.93mm. I'd have to swing down to home depot to get the right size, though would the slightly smaller diameter cause a problem?

If this was a brake caliper bolt - then I would definetly replace it with the right one, but when it's a parking brake bolt (which I've probably used 10 times) I'm not too concerned.

Hopefully this is the cheaper method. If anyone has done the same, please let me know.

Dont forget that it is not uncommon for people to ride accidentally with the parking brake on. Lot of strain in that situation especially as the P brake heats up. Dont know what to tell you but if it were me I'd prolly use the factory bolt even tho it is $pendy
 
I wish I hadn't thrown my parking brake out...I would have given you both bolts. My parking brake quit working about a month after buying the sled new, so i just removed the whole thing to save a tiny bit of weight. If I ever get my sled back I'll probably go with one of those weightless brake kits. At least I know those would work.

Thanks for the reply's - crazy that some one can make money selling the "weightleess parking brake" for $100, while yamaha decides to make a seperate parking brake casting, machine it, nice little springs, put two bolts in, run an extra cable and lever up to the bars, etc. seems strange that this would not be a stock item on the RX1 (for the weight and cost savings).

I think I'm either going to replace the bolts with normal M6's or take it right off......
 
By the way, I didn't answer your actual question. Go ahead and use the bolts you found. Pick up a nut for them as well, and use the bolts that are slightly too long. Thread the nut on the bolt, then trim the bolt to the proper length and file the cut edge smooth. Remove the nut, which will repair any damaged threads.

If you have any doubts about the strength of the bolt, get a hardened bolt. You probably won't have much luck at Home Depot...try a hardware store, or if you live near a fairly well built up city, an actual fastener store.

The difference in diameters is tiny...not all bolt threads are absolutely perfect. The tiny difference you show is far less than the size of a human hair.

Might have done it the way they did for product liability reasons. The weigthless parking brake could bleed down over a day, a week, a month. The mechanical one they have is failsafe even tho it seems needlessly complicated
 
come to think of it - I think my old 97 Mach Z had a similar "weightless" parking brake on the brake lever. I think it just held the hydraulic cylinder closed - which could over time bleed by as you mentioned.
But then again, the old Mach was designed to be a featherweight of a sled... ha ah
 
I sort of liked the mechanical parking brake. Sure it's heavier and more parts, but it is a true parking brake that won't let go over time. You can actually use it to help keep the sled parked (like on my sloped driveway or on the trailer).

What bothers me is about 2 months after I picked up my sled it stopped working. I never left it on while riding (other than off the trailer once or twice), but the shoes are worn right down. (I can't see how anyone would leave it on while riding with the lever right where your left hand grips the handlebars)

Then I found out the brake shoes aren't available separately and you have to replace the entire brake assembly for a total of $182!!!

So since I've had about 7000 kms on my sled I've had no parking brake at all - just a bunch of extra parts and weight to carry around...

Sorry to go off topic - I don't know the anser to the bolt yet. I'm heading out to the garage right now to take the parking brake off though (changing the track).
 
Mine just stopped working. I never left it on (I have large hands, and that lever would be obvious as soon as I put my hand on the bar) but I had to adjust it like 3 times the first month, then I ran out of adjustment. The pads were fine...just a slight amount of wear. I asked the dealer I bought it from, but they told me that anything having to do with the brakes was a wear item, not covered under warranty. Now that I know how much those pads cost, I'm really glad I ditched the whole thing.

Same thing happened to mine. It just ran out of adjustment.

I haven't looked carefully to see if there's a way to adjust it further, but my dealer said it needed to be replaced.

Just as you were, I was also told it was a wear item.
 
I thought I had tossed out my old brake assembly, but I found it today while packing up some things at the shop. If you want the bolts...or even the whole parking brake assembly, send me a PM...or better yet, an e-mail at jpalton@cayuse.net with your address.
