Picked up an 08 phazer for my son at the end of last season. When I put the sled into reverse it appears to go in fine, as the cluster recognizes it's in reverse, however when I go to give it throttle it appears that the throttle is in override and will not rev the engine, but only sputter?? It will also not go back into forward without shutting the sled off and restarting?? Any help would be great. I've read about many reverse issue but have not seen anything about this issue.
Thx in advance.

Phazers frequently need you to move the sled a bit to get it to actually go in reverse. I think it's just a question of getting the gears to mesh. I haven't started mine yet this season but IIRC it will still beep but the reverse indicator on the gauge will flash (vs. a steady light) to show it's not actually in reverse.
When you try and give it gas and it's in this partial-reverse mode it won't accept it, It seems to cut fuel to prevent it revving.
Generally compressing the suspension with a slight pumping motion with your legs or tugging back on the handlebars enough to jog the sled back a bit is enough to engage reverse. Failing that, getting off and tugging on the bumper to move it a few inches should do the trick. My last-ditch trick if none of these work is to shut off the motor and start it again.
It seems to me that the more warmed up it is the easier it gets to engage reverse (after 30 min of faster riding it generally won't take more than just moving the suspension by pumping with my legs once if it doesn't engage right away). Note that chaincase temp is going to be more dependent on riding time and speed than on engine temp.

When you push the button, does the R light go solid or does it flash? If it flashes and the beeping is "off", meaning it's not a regular beep, beep like a truck backing up, then it's not in reverse. Like mentioned above, it can be fussy to get it to shift into reverse. Some need to be rocked back and forth, others you need to lift up the rear of the sled.
There is an updated belt and secondary clutch shim to get it to work easier (there's a bulletin on it) and I found that it helps to adjust the chain a tad on the loose side instead of spec. I turn the adjuster until it just barely makes contact with the chain.

The r light goes solid, but the beeper is removed so not sure what that is doing.
I'm going to start with chain tension and go from there.
Also how do you get the updated shim kit?
Thank again for the help

iv done all the updates and the best iv found to get it into reverse is pick up the rear end and drop it... works every time

Yup like Farmerschiferl said it works everytime. Get off the sled lift the back and drop it down and it will shift. I normally lift it a couple inches. Then drop it.

Mine is sometimes worse. Push the button and nothing happens. It doesn't even try. Have to stop it and restart the engine to get it to go. No known cause. Almost feel like bypassing the whole damned thing and make my own switch.

Mine does the same but I think it's RPM related. If I hit the button too early after stopping and the revs haven't dropped then it won't react to the button.
My sled dips down to around 1400 rpms before recovering to normal idle around 1800-1900. If I hit the reverse button when the revs dip it always reacts.

I'll have to try that. At one time, I even thought hitting the reset button fixed it but alas, no. I do have the green D light that flashes almost each time on deceleration and I don't know why. I might have to pull the whole reverse gear case and go over it to be sure it's all good.

Hmmm... My D light only flashes when I shift from reverse and it hasn't engaged the gear.

Thanks all for the help on this. Ended up replacing the entire jack shaft and gear box, something in the box was not allowing the servo motor to slide the gears all the way into the reverse setting. Good to go now!

Glad u got it fixed. My 14 mtx only has 300 miles on it and is a pain especially in the deep powder. I found just rocking it back or even to one side helps

Reverse on the phazers are always finiky. All that's needed is to unload the secondary a bit and it will shift easily. Sometimes we have to undo the side panel partially and rotate the secondary back a bit to unload it to get it to shift. Kinda a pain, but it is always the go to solution when jumping on or rocking it don't work.
