Hey guys. Finally got the 04 rx1 out today for the first time. She ran pretty good for the first half of the day, other than the idle running away which was fixed by lowering the idle some. 2nd half of day it would miss and fall off at full throttle. There were times it would clean up and run good again. Then at the end of the day it would only run on 3 cylinders, a steady miss at anything above 1/4 throttle. All fresh fuel. Very disappointed. I pulled the plugs and am almost positive they're original. Really worn.
Has anyone had these symptoms from worn plugs and or bad coil packs? Also, where is the best place to get the coil packs, Dennis kirk has kimpex brand for 55 bucks each. If there is a better one let me know. We have a big ride planned for next weekend and I'm really needing my sled to run right by then, I'm kinda in a panic.

Any help very appreciated!

You need to clean the carbs before you spend money on anything. Take all the bowls off, clean them and clean all the jets as well. You probably have gasoline varnish residue gumming things up in all the tiny passages. After all of that, you may need to sync the carbs as well if you can't get a steady idle. Do not replace the coil packs, they last for many thousands of miles, and the aftermarket ones generally don't fit properly.

It seems like if it were dirty carbs it would have ran like that at the beginning of the day too? It ran really well for the first half.

I suppose some crud could have broke loose. I'll pull the carb rack today and see what we find. I'll get some plugs too

I have 3 brand new 8ES-82310-00 Yamaha OEM coil packs let me know if they will work for you.

I will try cleaning carbs and new plugs first, but just in case what you want for them?

You couldn't have been more right! Wow these things are full of crap!!! Do you happen to know what size of
orings for the main jets, mine are garbage.

I agree with thrasher, don't change out the coil packs. Very rare for them to fail. The three cylinder do not interchange with the 4 cylinder and vice-versa.
Also, I've seen instances where the aftermarket list them wrong.
Clean carbs thoroughly and put new spark plugs in.
Should be able to get new 0-rings from Yamaha, or most automotive stores.

Always think carbs, before anything else with these engines. I found the two ways to avoid gumming up the carbs during summer storage. You can start and run your sled every three weeks during the off season with stabalized premium fuel, or, install two fuel shut-offs on the two lines running to the fuel pumps, turn them off at the end of the season and run the sled until it dies. That way there is no fuel in the carbs to evaporate and leave varnish behind. However, after running things dry, it does make it more difficult to get the engine going come the new season. I just use quick-start to get things going, but I know others have different suggestions on that.

Well I hit a hangup, carb # 3 float bowl has a stripped screw head. I'm scared to death of drilling it out. I tried different bits but no luck. Taking the rack to work tomorrow hopefully someone will have a neat trick to get it out.

Surprised you aren't able to get a small vise-grip pliers on it since the bowls are somewhat square; especially since you have the rack off. Another option would be to use a dremel to cut a groove in the head of the screw so as to make it a regular vs phillips or I've also had luck with those E-Z Out bits too.

A common thing to do back in the day was to replace those screws with allen head screws to avoid issues like this.

Unfortunately my main toolboxes are in storage. I just have a hobo freight 5 drawer cart here for now, we just moved down here from Washington and my shop won't be built until this spring. The little 2 car garage won't hold my stuff haha. I do like the dremel idea, and yes, I most definitely am going to swap the Phillips heads out with Allen's, or torx. But the vice grips I have here just slip off, I quit before I marred the bowl up. The right side cover had the same issue, I had to use a chisel and hammer to get a couple of those screws out. I replaced them with stainless m6 hex head bolts and washers.

Got it out, found stainless screw at the hardware store. All 4 are clean, all jets and passages. I left the main jet o rings off.
I didn't mess with the air screws. Wondering if I should set them all at 2 turns out or leave them be? My riding is at 5000 ish ft here.

I left the main jet o rings off.

Do you mean one of these o-rings? Not sure that's a good idea.
