Hey Turbo experts. Looking for a little advice. Waiting on a few items to complete the install of a used kit that I purchased from a member. Had a few questions regarding initial startup:
Should I use a small pump and pre-oil the turbo through the oil intake port? Is that necessary?
Should i start it with the oil intake fitting a little loose at the turbo to ensure flow?
How long should it take to build oil pressure and start flowing?
Any other tips?

Garrett does recommend to prime before starting. You can put oil in at the inlet but you need to be patient because it does not just run right through. The other option which I haven't done is pull the fuel pump relay and turn over. It takes about 5 seconds before oil starts flowing out of the turbo outlet. If you want to know that oil is flowing unhook oil outlet hose from stator cover and turn 180 and start it until you see oil coming out hose.

I bought mine new from Hurricane there is nothing special you need to do. Bolted mine on and started it ran like a raped ape in a herd of turtles. I did have to shin the waste gate for a couple of pounds of boost but other than that it was turn key. What are you running for clutching if you have not purchased a kit yet I suggest either Hurricane or Ulmer. Do you have boost and AFR gauges? You won't have any problems with 850'S or stock Winder when you get it set up correctly.

Thanks for the info. A new oil outlet hose is one of items im waiting for so when it comes I'll put it on backwards, pull the fuel pump relay and prime it that way. I figured I'd want some oil in there before a full start up.Garrett does recommend to prime before starting. The kit came with Hurricane clutching. Helix, purple secondary spring and primary arms. Did you use stock primary spring? Were you happy with that spring?I bought mine new from Hurricane there is nothing special you need to do. Bolted mine on and started it ran like a raped ape in a herd of turtles. I have an AFR gauge. No Boost. Because the kit is preset to approx. 6# I wondered if the extra gauge is necessary?

Boost gauge is not really necessary I was just wondering mine would only build about 5 pounds of boost, then after small adjustment it is now right at 7 and that made a huge difference. As far as primary spring goes stock one works good, I got one from Ullmer with a little less pre load. The secondary how ever will be a nightmare for ya installing that purple spring, it does however work good with Dave's set up. The only thing that sucks is when ya have to change a belt. How are your primary weights set up? I mean everything should be close if it was already installed on a machine. What about gearing, if your running stock gears it will pull like a freight train to a littte over 100mph and the start to run out of steam do to the lower gearing. It is a blast in the woods and tighter trails though.

Yah that spring was a b$tch. Eventually just pulled it off the sled, laid it between two pieces of wood and went at it (I think I remember a date in highschool that went like that). I have a Thunder Products belt adjuster so getting the belt off in the future will be a piece of cake. Primary weights are set for the kit and I'm on stock gears. Likely make a change to those next year. 21/41 I understand is the place to be? That sound correct?

Yep that's what I got in mine, tried 24/41 worked good for top end but seemed like it was pretty sluggish down low. I think the 21/41 is the best all around gearing for the turbo Vipers.
