So I made mention of this in another thread, but I think it warrants it's own discussion. I am coming off a Ski Doo so I am unaware of whether or not this is normal with Yamahas. Every time I let off the throttle on my viper the primary clutch slams back to disengage and makes a very loud bang almost like I am whacking it with a hammer. Is this a common trait of Yamaha clutches i.e. are they all like that or is this isolated to the clutches in our sleds. (Note: I am under the assumption that everyone's viper does this since some other members keyed in on the topic in the previous thread)

To further my question; first and foremost: should this be of concern? If so, are there ways to stop this from happening either from an adjustment standpoint or an aftermarket modification?

Yes These clutches back shift so as the clutch back shifts the the primary closes faster causing slack in the belt that will make that noise as the track bites under deceleration and the belt rides up the secondary

I have 140 miles on mine. I noticed it during the first 10 - 15 miles but it has gone away. I never noticed it on my Nytro or Apex. I would assume that the secondary spring is just tight in the beginning but I am no mechanic.

Usually if your clutch is slamming open then there some kind of problem , either a bushing or something , it isn't normal for them to do this should be smooth , but first pull off the clutch and clean it really good or take it back to dealer and let them do it

It could be the brass bushing or the plastic bushings that the spider rides in , most of the time it's those , they get dirty and the spider sticking

3 conflicting responses... :o| ...I will post a video tomorrow or this weekend to hopefully better hone in on what I am describing

Does not sound right. I never hear a bang noise ever when I ride. My Nytro used to make noise from the clutch spinning but never a bang noise. You need to get that checked.

It sounds to me that your primary clutch is binding. You can try removing your belt, then rev the engine just enough to close the sheaves. Now release the throttle completely and watch how smoothly the sheaves release. I'm guessing that its hanging up midway then snapping open. I had this same problem with my ski-doo. What ever you try , I would still let the dealer handle things under warranty.

I ride a 1200 doo but dad has the viper, the viper has a very good engine braking reduction system this is what is causing that banging you describe. The system keeps the sled from engine braking and makes it coast more like a 2 stroke. Its ok nothing is wrong our viper did it too when it was stock, With my clutching now for the turbo it does not do this.

I need to see and hear a video of it. No bang noise on mine what so ever....

did you ever rev your sled without a belt just enough to engage the clutch (not recommended) and when let off the clutch kinda springs back and makes a "bang" if you will. Happened on my Nytro and viper when driving, I'm not worried about that at all.

Absolutely, but I don't here the bang that is being described above unless my definition of a "bang" noise is different than a normal noise. That is why I need to hear it.

I'm curious to hear what he is hearing but I can tell you that I'm picky about my stuff so everything and anything sticks out. I've had the primary click(bang) depending on how you describe it from the get go on all my sleds. I think they are noisey a little. On mine at least Iam not at least bit concerned. Never had an issue and rpms are always within range.

Take it also for what its worth. I'm not all that smart about clutches.
