Primary clutch exploded

Weight pocket is u shapes and not webbed back into the sheave like previous clutch.. Add to this the drilled set screw holes and the flexing which occurs under bigger power and they break... And usually right through that u shaped pocket through the set screw holes... In some instances, might flex enough before breaking and weight slips the roller... Either way it's primarily a weak sheave and pocket area for the greater level of power...a good point is to not run out of grea.. However taller gearing proposes more belt issues

I'm there all the time and just haven't seen any Team drive clutches blown on 998's.
Mike, whenever I say TEAMs are tougher or better on belts, someone tells me they are blowing up all over HCS...But they never can show me the link. Sounds alot like other internet rumours of blown engines. I am one to post pics, links, and speeds to prove my statements whenever possible. Internet hype can really hurt the truth.

Many valid points and explanations of what could cause something like this.... My thoughts. Same clutch design that has been used for 25+ yrs. Too much mustard being put on the hot dog! This is a case of relevance...… The new Ford GT 500 Mustang isn't using the 1990 trans! Think we are seeing the limits.

The clutch has appearance similarities to the clutch used 25 years ago, but it is much different and has been beefed up in many areas. This isn't to say it's an awesome clutch by any means, but claiming it is the same design as 25 years ago is simply false.

I’ve seen countless high mile/high boost RX1/Apex based sleds up here in Ontario over the years and never seen the older primary break apart like that. Wowza.

It may have been the pre 17 ones that I saw. But I did see a number is blown up Team Primary’s on HCS. I will look up links when I have a min.

I just put a post over there Dan. Lets see how many have any info about blowing Teams on the 998.

I'm wondering how many belts the OP has blown on this machine also? IMO too many blown belts could weaken and crack the sheave in those weight areas, afterall it is enough to drive the stub shaft over and out of alignment. Something to consider, but think about all the belts some have blown and you don't see their clutches coming apart like this. Doesn't add up that the clutch is weak with all of them out there, and all that have blown belts. I still think myself the weights rolled over the rollers here. Who knows.

Im on there all the time, still have not seen any. So please give link and not just speculation. I know about the warranty crack in 17, and PRE 17 TEAM issues, but if you go there now they are all mostly happy.

There are way way way more issues with YAM clutches, and belt life then TEAM period.

Dan

I'll let you know how the team clutches hold up at the end of the season!!!
I took vacation in Feb and plan on racking up some miles (19 zr 9000limited tuned by hurricane)

If you look at the picture redmach posted, it looks like there is no roller in the tower on the right side of the picture. You can however see the one in the tower at the top of the picture.

I never blew a belt. Changed them every 1500 miles. Clutch did rattle a lot though.

I think I heard of any early 17 team coming apart . Those pictures are circulating. Cat did recall them all and they were made even stronger on the new versions. Simply put the two clutches side by side and the Yamaha clutch is no where near as beefy. Not saying the team out performs as the Yamaha clutch does work good. Apparently Carey Lewis is doing some magic to the Teams to bring them to life.

Another expert...….

Well that rules out the clutch weakened and cracking from blown belts then.

Yes, the recalled clutch Team I've heard of one letting go, but recall was more an issue from the belt deflection post bearing seizing up I thought. I have a NEW replacement Team clutch here and it is 2 lbs heavier than a Yamaha SideWinder Primary. Steel spider too! Wide rollers (50 % wider) and no clutch rattle either.

Yes you are correct Nitro! Two washers towards the one side. The roller is totally gone and MIA.
