Proper starting procedure?

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'll keep it well charged and follow the advice here.

This is the million dollar question!!
The cat dealer said they were at the release show this year and the big wigs at cat told him to tell all owners to not cycle the fuel system. Just turn the key and go.
Yamaha never mentioned anything about not cycling the fuel system they just told me when I do turn the key to keep it turn till it fully starts.
Worst thing is , sometimes I need to give it a little blip of the throttle for it to fully run.
I don't think either of manufacturers know what exactly is going on and more importantly know what to do to fix it.
In saying all that I do the same procedure as above for hot and cold start up since I lost my starter and have no issues since.....knock wood!!!

I think you nailed it, neither Cat or Yami knows whats going on! I think the Cat method would start a cold sled just fine but would require more cranking time, not good for starter or battery.

Either method works just do what starts YOUR sled quicker. Most important and what everyone agrees on is hold that key turned firmly until you know engine is running and a hair longer.

I would not crank the starter more than 3-5 count without giving it a rest.

X2 on the " Hair Longer " The handful of times I had a kickback I didn't go that hair longer and the engine didn't continue to run after letting off the key. It was on the second starting sequence that it would kick back (one of the cylinders all charged with fuel and air ready to fire and at just the right point of crankshaft rotation). Now if for some reason it fails to start on the first try I'll give the starter a quick "bump" to bring that piston up close to TDC so hopefully it won't kick. I've done this a few times and so far no kick. Just sad that we even need to be thinking about all this!

So say your starter turns and ring gear has a broken tooth but starter is not engaging can you turn your primary clutch backwards or forwards and have a chance at maybe starting your sled ?
I have had lots of kick backs on my sled and I only have 700KM

Yes you can I did that the day before it completely failed, we were way in the back country, if it gets that bad don't turn off your sled until your back to your truck because likely you won't start it again.

As trevorl1 has mentioned....yes you can. After the initial grind sound....you have about 3-8 starts left in it (from the guys I have seen starters go out)
