Hay everyone... Back in Nov of 2002 I was stupid enough to buy myself a brand new Polaris Edge 800. Reason?? Well, that's a whole story in itself. Fact is, i'm now a proud owner of a Yamaha. I bought myself a 2005 Rx Warrior. WOW, what a machine.. The anxiety of waiting for the snow is almost unbearable lol
Shes got just a tiny shade over 5300 miles on er.. It's obvious that its been very well taken care of. I spent the last 2+ weeks reading a great deal on this site and have learned a whole lot about Yamaha sleds, and 4 strokes in particular. The wealth of information here on TY is fantastic and I thank you all for such great reading. Although, i would like to ask a couple minor questions that that I wasn't able to dig up here in the forums. May seem like silly questions, but they are valid to me and perhaps others.
This sled has a set of them K&N Filter charger things on it... It has no pre filter of any sort. It also has aftermarket carb springs, and the jets were swapped out for 165 jets. The previous owner says that he has always used premium fuel in the sled. After reading several posts on here, premium fuel is NOT the way to go for multiple reason, and standard regular fuel is the proper fuel to use ( I live in Canada and Ethanol is NOT used). Q1) Does this rule still apply with these K&N Filter chargers and bigger jets ?? Or should I run premium?? Also... Q2) after reading a few posts about these filters freezing up, I was going to take an old pair of ladies nylons, and wrap them around the filters, as well as in front of the hood vents... do you think that will be sufficient to stop any freezing?? if not.. suggestions....
This next question, may very well sound crazy... but being a 2 stroke guy, these 4 strokes are a whole new game for me, and I really want to avoid as much trouble as possible once the snow comes.... Q3) Couple somebody explain to me in detail, what the BEST procedure for starting the sled would be?? from choke position, how long to leave the choke there, when to shut the choke off, what to watch for when changing choke position etc.?? reason I'm asking, is because just the few times I already started her, I don't think I was operating the choke properly, and she keeps stalling unless I held my finger on the throttle until she warmed up for a couple minutes... I'm sure this is not the proper way to do things...
Q4) one more quick question... after i started her, and let er warm up to normal operating temperature, I couple hear what sounded like an ungodly rattle noise coming from under the seat near the fuel tank... would that be the exhaust doughnut gaskets that these sleds are known for??? Doesn't really sound like a 'leak' but more of a rattle when goosing the throttle AFTER its warmed up to normal temperature...
Thank you all for your time...

I have an 03 with the ECP kit (K&N's springs etc..) have been running regular gas since day one never a problem.
Good idea on the panty hose

Leave choke on full till she starts and then back off to a decent RPM to warm up. Sounds to me like you may have dirty pilot jets which is why it runs like crap at idle.
Yep sounds like the donuts are worn out typical for that mileage.
Minor fixes your gonna love the 4 strokes

i also have k@n fitlers and run regular pump gas in mine on the trails. as for the choke i just use mine to start it then drop it down to almost no choke and have had no issues with that for rough idling it sounds like the carbs need a good cleaning

Good idea on the panty hoseshould not be an issue however unless you spend a lot of time in the powder.

Excelent! Thank you so much for your reply. Is there anywhere online where I can get the gaskets that the members here prefer? I have always found online is cheaper than going to the dealer, especially here in Canada. Our dollar is very close to par rite now, so it won't much matter if they originate in the US or Canada. I decided I'm going to take er to the dealer after i change the exhaust gaskets and have the carbs cleaned and synchronized (wish i knew somebody who had a set of gauges) I'm going to take the seat off today (if the wife will find me the time) and run it with the seat off just to be sure that it is in fact the doughnut gaskets. Thank you for your reply once again. And yes, i think I'm going to really enjoy the 4 stroke. I'm enjoying the fact that i now own a Yamaha VS a Pooo more than anything tho lol.

Awesome... Thanks... Think I'll be doing the same thing and running regular gas as well. okay, maybe that is what the problem is... I'm going to get the carbs cleaned and resynchronized, and also going to put fresh plugs in her here in the very near future. I'll make a post and mention how i made out. Thanks for your reply.

i would reccomend the cr10ek's for plugs if the previos owner did not have them in there already.
i do not run the k+n's but regular pump gas is all i run. i have the holtzman carb springs in mine as well.might want to check and see if some clutching has been done but you will not be able to tell if it is right untill you run it on snow and tell us engagement and peak rpms.
hehe mine used to look like that but i think it looks better now as do most people that see it.

Sorry for taking so long to reply.. Life has been very hectic the last month..
Those are VERY nice pictures, thank you for sharing!! I really REALLY like the color change!! Mind if I steal your idea?? Looks like a spring project to me!!
The idling situation was just me not operating the choke properly I think...
I may have mucked up the plugs in teh process so i put new plugs in as well. I elected to stick with the spec. plugs for now. I contacted the previous owner and there was no clutching mods done to the sled at all. Just the jets, springs, and filters.
The gaskets were replaced last season so that kinda got me worried about that noise. Took the seat off, and the rattle was the friggen heat shield over top of the muffler. lol I could see two tiny little spot welds where somebody attempted to stop it in the past. I'm just going to leave it as-is seen as how it's only at a low-mid idle when it rattles. Not that big of a deal really.
Also, I got looking around, and noticed the end caps on the rails were almost warn thru... New caps and slides came in yesterday.. But... I'm still mowing the friggen lawn in my speedos with a cigar hangin from my mouth here in Nova Scotia... Grrrrrrrrr!! So, got lots of time to put them on...
VERY late start to the season for us here.... Thanks for your replies guys...

I have the same set up with a Bender Clutch kit. Awesome set up. Choke takes a little getting used to. I just gradually close the choke as the sled warms up. Also I have been running Outerwear filter covers with absolutely no freezing of the carbs. They are relatively inexpensive.

Where are you getting this nonsense from? We're going into the SECOND WINTER of having our gas loaded up with ethyl alcohol.grashoper said:This sled has a set of them K&N Filter charger things on it... It has no pre filter of any sort. The intake pressure is higher with the filters than with the airbox, therefore bigger jets are required to deliver the same amount of fuel. The cheaper the gas the better.Q1) Does this rule still apply with these K&N Filter chargers and bigger jets ??
The stock airbox works great. Nice linear throttle performance and negligible loss in power. Putting it back to stock will certainly help.Q2) after reading a few posts about these filters freezing up, I was going to take an old pair of ladies nylons, and wrap them around the filters, as well as in front of the hood vents... do you think that will be sufficient to stop any freezing?? if not.. suggestions....
Lots of people swear by the plain filters on the intake, but it is all placebo -- result of getting 90% of the engine's power out at 25% throttle makes some people think that its making more power. Dyno charts are misleading because they suggest that there is more "midrange" power, but the transmission is CVT, so you can just give it a little harder to get the same power out of it. Top end power difference is very small.
The least amount of choke where it will still run. Don't touch the throttle at all until the engine light stops blinking. This next question, may very well sound crazy... but being a 2 stroke guy, these 4 strokes are a whole new game for me, and I really want to avoid as much trouble as possible once the snow comes.... Welcome back, the rattle is nothing important, just turn the idle up a bit. its called the rpm reducer or something like that, it takes the 10,5 down to a usable rpm for the 2ndary to handle without blowin up.
