What is your trick to block the primary when you pull off with a puller ?

Used to put a wooden hammer handle through the spokes. A hockey stick cut down works also. I use a clutch holder from Goodwin now, much better.

Trying to visualize this...
I think this assumes the lower cowling has been removed. Easy to do on all newer Yamahas as they are held on with screws/dzus ... Viper cowling is riveted on.

I use an impact wrench on the puller. I can hold the clutch by hand.

Ditto, what mtotguy said

Otherwise, a handle of some sort

Some don't like to use an impact on the crankshaft. I think some 2 strokes may be more sensitive to this as they are pressed together. I use a wooded hammer handle.

Having broke a puller off in the crank in a Yamaha long ago I now put a large gob of grease in the crank threads before putting the puller in. Puller hits grease and compresses like the water trick. Just make sure to take a screwdriver and get most grease back out.

I've always hooked a ratchet strap to one of the towers and back to the frame somewhere. Taking off the bolt I put it at 12 o'clock on the clutch, putting the bolt back in or using the puller I put it at 6 o'clock. I then use a large socket wrench to tighten the puller to around 100 ft lbs then tap down on the puller with a rubber mallet lightly. Pops right off every time.
