remote shock adjuster cable busted 2008 Vector

It is possible to replace the end. Most truck repair shops carried kits with an assortment of ends for making cables but because they're not used much anymore it's getting harder to find them. The cable end looks something like the top picture.

So, while doing some pre-season maintenance I found the cable pulled out of the tunnel mounted RA on my 2010 Vector. The cable was pulled out of the coupler that threads to the RA. Digging a little deeper, the cable was also broken close to the shock. I'm thinking I'll not bother replacing the cable. The question is, do I clean it up by removing the rubber boot from the shock that protects the cable? Or do I leave it in there? I'd be able to get in there & adjust the shock with a screwdriver if I remove the boot, but will moisture enter the shock where the boot is fastened to it if the boot is removed? What's your thoughts.
