Muffler - Going to put some nickle anti-seize on the muffler pins. Boy removing that muffler with the plastic panel removed opens up everything on the starboard side. Look at those oil tubes Rockerdan talk about removing for changing the oil. Gearcase bolts, adjustment screw - easy. Thats all a newbie sees .. not sure what those 1 1/2" and 1" knobs are with the slots in them on that case

Yes I'm doing the rivnuts mod w/ SS rivnuts ...that what caused all this
SS rivnut mod advice - spend money, get a quality rivnut tools (2) and some extra mandrels

Yes I ordered them with I think w/ the black oxide coating (forget where) but the M8x1.25x20mm is a little short ... would like to see some threads stick out beyond the flange BUT not sure if I have room for the longer bolt at the exhaust elbow

Nope use M8 x 1.25 x 20mm because two of the bottom holes are dead ended (no threaded outlet).

Looked on line at three different auto part places and nothing comes up in metric sizes, just standard. Advance auto, Autozone, NAPA, btw.....maybe Jegs?Nope use M8 x 1.25 x 20mm because two of the bottom holes are dead ended (no threaded outlet).

Just order these and cut to size.... These are 10.9 rated which are equivalent to a grade 8 bolt...
You can match the OEM length of 23mm.

Good point on torque - I've worked on few 998s where the bolts were tightened so tight it actually bent the flanges on the muffler. Manual calls out torque of 9 ft.lbs first, and then final of 18 ft.lbs in a criss-cross pattern.Make sure to reinstall with Nickel anti seize and check torque value in manual. I torque a bit under described with no issues.

I agree completely. One of the smartest things EVER done to this chassis, BOTH sides.Unless you do the rivnut mod. A project that will pay for itself for as long as you own the sled!!!!!

While you are this far along... with the muffler off, use a tie wrap or rubberband and hold the muffler spring up in its mounted position. Now take some black Permatex silicone ADHESIVE ( it says it right on the package ) and put it all around the bottom hook of the spring ( do this last thing for the night, letting adhesive cure overnight ) and it will hold the spring in place for you in the future. Kind of like the payback you get with the RivNut mod. Cheers.Swampcat Agree.
