Riding Alone & GPS Communication

Although I am considering one especially if I start doing any kind of long distance touring, one thing that everybody should do is take a first aid and CPR course. It's all fine and dandy to call for help but you still have to survive until they get there. I got it through my work on a regular basis and it's actually saved my #*$&@ a few times. One time I broke my leg in my driveway slipping on ice. I was alone, nobody around and didn't have a phone. After about 20 minutes of screaming and nobody hearing me, I had to stabilize my broken leg using my good leg after straightening it and then drag myself into the house to call 911.

I've used it lots of times for burns, cuts, stuff in eyes, not just for myself but for others as well, including family members.

I couldn't agree more! Everyone should take first aid and CPR courses; it has been years for me, but when my brother in law had his accident, at least the "basics" had sunk in, and I had some idea of what to do, and what not to do until the EMT's got there. I think that snowmobile clubs would be doing a big service to their members to hold training sessions. In today's busy, high tech, world, I don't know how many people would actually take the time to go to the trainings, but I know that I would,

I did quite a bit of research on this type of item earlier this year

Although it will not leave cookie crumbs for others to follow if you really need help there is not a better option out there that includes inreach and spot. This is what I use it can be purchased for 3xx

Wow great thread! All the years I have been riding when I would come across a lone rider I would think to myself that is not safe how can they do that, single or double riders on a single sled out in BFE. We all know you can possibly ride farther in a few hours then you could walk in a day.
I have been riding for over 40 years and never rode alone. Then came this year, my wife has scaled way back on riding (350 miles this season) and my buddies this year (550 miles) and they have backed out or went home early on many occasions and found myself riding alone. I have rode 2445 miles, 1545 of those all by myself. I would tell my wife my planned route for the day, send her text messages as check points on my route to ease her mind.
I am going to research and get one of these GPS units as mentioned to increase my wife's peace of mind as I can see riding alone is my future.

I have used my Garmin Inreach Explorer+ all season and it has worked great. I can send unlimited preset texts to my wife for free just to let her know I am ok. You can also send/receive 40 regular texts per month with my plan She can also see my location with those texts and there is unlimited tracking. Well worth the money as I do quite a bit of solo riding. I strongly recommend this device very fair price for the options it gives you. I have their recreation plan which with the annual fee and using it for 3 months (jan-march) costs me approx $130.
