Although I am considering one especially if I start doing any kind of long distance touring, one thing that everybody should do is take a first aid and CPR course. It's all fine and dandy to call for help but you still have to survive until they get there. I got it through my work on a regular basis and it's actually saved my #*$&@ a few times. One time I broke my leg in my driveway slipping on ice. I was alone, nobody around and didn't have a phone. After about 20 minutes of screaming and nobody hearing me, I had to stabilize my broken leg using my good leg after straightening it and then drag myself into the house to call 911.
I've used it lots of times for burns, cuts, stuff in eyes, not just for myself but for others as well, including family members.
