I have an 03 RX-1 with a little over 9000kms on it. Over the last 1500-2000kms its been fouling the plugs up pretty bad. Its always burned oil (as most do) but I'm wondering if the rings are really shot and thats whats ruining the plugs. Any suggestions??
Have you done a compression test?

Not yet. I need to find the testing unit first. Will the dealer usually let you borrow one?

What are the compression numbers for that sled??

A leak down test would be more accurate.
If your doing a compression test, make sure the motor is warm or your #'s will be low.
The spec at sea level is 179 - 206 psi. You would like to see all four #'s close to each other.

Thanks!!!! I can't see it being good with the excessive oil consumption and gradual loss of top end power. Since I'm not a mechanic, I'm sure it would be a personal nightmare to change the rings. Will an 05 motor bolt in?

Another symptom prom a previous post from Lazy Bastard:
You should definitely put the crankcase breather back to the airbox as the vacuum from the airbox will help to draw blowby gases out of the crankcase. You can suddenly find yourself with EXTREME oil consumption if you fail to apply a vacuum to the crankcase breather.
Can I just drop my sled off at your place and you can bring it back to perfect health???!!!!!!!

Does this also blacken the plugs very quickly?? (its getting expensive putting new plugs in every 100kms at 5 bucks a piece!!)

If you lack a vacuum on the crankcase vent, the progression of problems will be as follows;
1) increased crankcase pressure leading to increased oil being drawn past the rings into the combustion chamber.
2) the increased oil in the combustion chamber will cause an increase in carbon deposits on the spark plug, valves, chamber, top of the piston, and most importantly, the RINGS.
3) an increase in carbon on the rings will cause them to stick in the groove and cause a loss of seal. This loss of seal will allow more exhaust gases to escape past the rings and more oil to get into the combustion chamber, which leads back to step (1).
What you would notice: the symptoms are PROGRESSIVE and will get worse over time. With enough oil getting into the combustion chamber, you can definitely experience spark plug fouling problems. Ever notice how 2-smokes foul a lot of plugs? Thats because of the oil getting on them.
Note that even with stock crankcase ventilation, there is a set of circumstances that can lead to the same problem. These circumstances involve the breather freezing up inside the airbox, causing a loss of ventilation. If this happens enough, the rings can be compromised by carbon and lead to excessive blowby to the point that the crankcase vent is insufficient, you then can experience the same cascading progression of symptoms.

This sounds like the choke is stuck on, have you checked you cable and choke mechanism?

Before getting into the expensive stuff, have you tried the snake-oil fix? Its unlikely to change anything (particularly if you're really badly plugged up), but given the next cheapest option, its worth a try. Try running a whole lot of ring free or seafoam in the fuel and in the oil and cross your fingers or pray to some god that it cleans up. If not, you'll need to rip it down and change the rings.

I went to Crappy Tire looking for Seafom and they had never heard of it. And since I blew a suspension shock and broke the suspension in it last night, my riding for the year is done. With the crankcase vent, if that is the problem would it still show full compression?

I live in the Toronto area, you can find seafoam at Carquest.

Yep I was looking for Seafoam at Crappy Tire too a few weeks back and they had never heard of it. I found it at a local car/farm supply store.

Carquest has Sea-Foam and you need to get the RingFree in the US.
I had alot of oil consumption and a "shock treatment" of RingFree seemed to have cleared it up. I was buring 1L of oi every 900 kms and after the RingFree I now have just over 1500 kms and I have not yet had to add oil.
RingFree works.....never used SeaFoam but I have heard it works well in the fuel system.
