RX-1 Compression

Is this just a band aid fix? I'm at the point now that I can't sell the sled because of all the work that needs to be done. I'm thinking if I have to spend the money I might as well go all out and replace all bearings, track, jackshaft bearings, shocks, extend the track (I was going to sell it and buy an Attack) sway bars, exhaust doughnuts, ect. ect. But if the motors pooched I might as well part the whole sled out. Why do the snowmobile God's hate me?????

I think your jumping to conclusions, before any conclusion is made you need a compression and leak down test (leak down is better but CR woudl give some help), next try some of the additives to see if that helps, replacing the spark plug so freqently is masking another problem hard to say its carbs, or oil but it could be a simple as a crankcase vent that is plugged or something.

Its easy to get right to the end and the sled is totalled, but go baby steps dissect the problem and in the end if required a re-ring is not the end of the world.

Haven't seen too many people that needed new rings.
Have read alot on here about the rings sticking.
Seafoam in the oil seems to take care of it.

Basterd is right, the crank vent is very important.
I also agree with kinger, actually try things before worrying too much.

If the rings are sticking, your compression test will be low also, so try the seafoam first. Do a search for sticking rings and/or seafoam and see how long it took for most to get it cleared up.

I don't want to upset anyone but this discussion of the crankcase vent helping to sel the rings does not have merit. There is an neglibible amount of vacuum being generated by having the crankcase vent being connected to the airbox. I've been listening to this claim for the ECP kit EVAC connection as well as the stock connection. I've measured the vaccum created by both connections with a sensitive manometer, under all conditions I measured NO vaccum reading could be obtained. In the 04 and newer models, even if this connection could create a vacuum, it would be defeated by the slit in the hose which is there to prevent excessive crankcase pressure buildup if the vent hose pluds with ice. For those that don't believe, take the manometer used to sync the carbs and hook it up to the crankcase vent line. Many racing engines used in auto drag racing use a separate pump to pull a vacuum on the crankcase to provide a greater differential pressure across the piston rings. The pumps required to do this are fairly large.

Yamaha changed the construction of the piston rings in 2005. One of the members, Black John, reringed his )# with )% piston rings and eliminated his oil consumption problem. Upon disassembly, he measure the end gap of the 03 rings he removed and found the gap to be very large. They either started out with this end gap (doubtful due to Yamaha's excellent quality control) or the rings wore resulting in the excessive end gap.

My 03 uses about 1/2 qt. of oil in 1200 miles, far too much in my opinion so one of my summer projects is to rering it with the 05 rings.

10-4. I have a guy at work that has a tester and I'll give it a whirl next week. If the motor is good, I might just turn an RX-1 into an Attack!!!!!

plugs

before going to far the only time i have seen an rx 1 foul plugs was because of an over rich carb problem ie stuck choke , inlete needle etc. even when mine was burning lots of oil it never showed up as black or fouled spark plugs. over fueling with case oil burning as the gas will delut the oil and it will burn it off. when did you sevice your carbs last? all it takes is one stuck choke plunger out of four.

Mine burns 1 litre in 100miles,tried the sea-form in the gas 2 days ago,no fix.Used a whole can for 3/4 of a tank(no-way will i put that stuff in the oil).Guess i got to live with it,sled is only worth $5000can on a trade. If i got another smaller yamaha i would miss its deep-snow performance and sick top speed(112 on GPS).Great conditions here now for riding but spring is around the corner.

I tried the seafoam. I put 20 oz in the gas, 6 oz in the oil, and even poured some down the sparkplug holes.
For that tank of gas, the pipes burned so clean they were almost white inside, then the next tank, back to sooty black. I think it burned all of the seafoam out of the oil the first 200 miles.
No difference in oil consumption or performance, so basically $10 for one tank of clean pipes, and the guy behind me said my exhaust stank funny.
I guess snake oil is only good for snakes!

low slung
I bought an 06 Apex er, and the deep snow performance of my 03 RX1 is far superior. Glad I kept it also.
I had the Apex stuck more in 1500 miles than the RX1 in 14600.
Same track, same skis, same ridder, same conditions, in the deep the RX1 will run circles around the Apex.(both are 121s)

Ditto here on my 04 Warrior tried the same thing with the same results :o| 10600 miles, still running strong, using 4-6 ozs of oil every 100 miles.
Was thinking about trying RESTORE engine treatment :dunno:

Glad to hear that those older 4-stroke are better in deep snow vx700XTC.Yesterday i toasted the secondary on my sled racing with a F7 with twin pipes(my stock warrior was only 2sleds lengths behind and closing in on top end). The oil burning issue on my sled stopped when i changed the oil at the first of the season along with a treatment of yamaha combustion chamber cleaner. After about 200 miles the oil darkened, then heavy oil use.Seems when the oil breaks down they really use it.I have over 4000 miles on this sled and i can say despite all the trouble its the BEST sled i ever rode for deep snow PERIOD,it can go places that a ET410 with a 136 longtrack would get stuck(experienced it on first ride over the back country with this sled).Been reading a few stories on hear about these sleds motors blowing up,hope my sled don,t become a very expensive door stop. :exc:
