hi, i have recently bought a 2003 rx-1. today i noticed a slight knocking sound when traveling between 10-15 mph. when i accellerate the knocking quickens until i get past about 15 or so mph. i havent really noticed it travelling at higher speeds, maybe the engine is drowning it out,im not sure. it isnt very loud. the sled is running great outside of this odd noise. this was my first real ride on the machine so i dont know if thats is kinda normal or what? any input welcomed, thanks!

Knocking is not normal and usually a bad sign. Check your oil level?

Might want to check your primary clutch first as the weights and rollers tend to be noisy and seems like it's the engine, a quick way to check this is to remove the primary and start the engine, noise disappears you know you have to rebuild the primary clutch, if it don't you will have to dig deeper by examining the oil consumption, exhaust is it blue? things like the obvious when an engine in deteriorating rapidly! I know around here those years, some guys were using automotive oils and they would start smoking! Chances are it's the primary! cheers!

I had an rx1 engine with a knock at idle. There was a lot of metal in the oil pan and behind the magneto cover. Most of it stuck to a magnet, do connecting rod bearings have a steel component?

exhaust looks clean ,greyish.the oil is clean and full. i dont hear any noise when idling, only pretty much between 10-15 mph.Might want to check your primary clutch first as the weights and rollers tend to be noisy and seems like it's the engine, a quick way to check this is to remove the primary and start the engine, noise disappears you know you have to rebuild the primary clutch, if it don't you will have to dig deeper by examining the oil consumption, exhaust is it blue? things like the obvious when an engine in deteriorating rapidly! has the sled been fully defrosted between rides? could be a chunk of ice wearing between the cooler and the track. you could try backing up to see if it changes but i think it might be the reverse chucking at low speeds and it is normal. my old rx, apex and my brothers rs venture all do it.

that sounds possible, as i dont think it is something in the engine. i didnt notice it until about 25-30 miles into my drive. i will check it for ice. as for the reverse idea not sure how to check thathas the sled been fully defrosted between rides? could be a chunk of ice wearing between the cooler and the track. you could try backing up to see if it changes but i think it might be the reverse chucking at low speeds and it is normal. my old rx, apex and my brothers rs venture all do it.

the reverse gear chucks (i call it)/knocks at low speeds. all our delta box chassis sleds with reverse do this.
some times a chunk of ice drops off of the tunnel onto the track. i have had it jam the track and stall the sled once. when it drops, easyest thing to do to get it out is to back the sled up about 10' to get it to drop out.

belt usually gives a hermonic or vibe at higher speeds but a new one would not hurt to check with.

Bad belt with a chunk out of it will make a clunking sound at low speed.belt usually gives a hermonic or vibe at higher speeds but a new one would not hurt to check with.

the belt is new but i will check it. however ive found that when i raise the rear up with a stand and run it at diffent speeds with no weight on the sled it doesnt make a sound, sounds perfect. so i will take it for a drive and see if the knocking is there again. if it returns with the weight of me on it i am thinking it could be a bearing starting to go on the front drive axle(you know the one with the drive sprockets or wheel sprockets)?

bearing would keep making noise as the speed increased. just did one on my apex that failed and i could hear it howl louder as i went faster.

It might be your Proaction transfer rods banging on the end of travel! My 05 did that as I went over uneven trail. On flat road or flat trail say there was no noise, only on trail with small bumps or even large ones in it. You could only hear it at slow speeds because the motor and wind did not drown out the noise.
A driveshaft bearing on the clutch side can make a clunking noise at lower speed and on off throttle while being silent at speed. I drove mine for 10 miles to get home when I discovered the problem but what clued me in was I lost the speedo, not sure when the bearing went. I had just replaced all the bearings the year before. It was the only season I had not popped the seals and cleaned and regreased the drive bearings (routine maintenance now every year)! It had taken out the cage surrounding it as well as the speedo sensor. The 10 miles home easy on the throttle made no sound no vibration except for once or twice on off the throttle or bigger bumps. Chaincase side I would think the bearing would take out the seal and oil everywhere.
Hope you figure it out!

Look over the belt carefully, you said it is new however the symptoms seem to match a belt issue I have seen this many times over the years. A cog missing or narrow spot from burning the belt when stuck or track frozen or park brake on?the belt is new but i will check it. however ive found that when i raise the rear up with a stand and run it at diffent speeds with no weight on the sled it doesnt make a sound, sounds perfect. so i will take it for a drive and see if the knocking is there again. if it returns with the weight of me on it i am thinking it could be a bearing starting to go on the front drive axle(you know the one with the drive sprockets or wheel sprockets)?
