I've been lurking this section for a week or so and am most likely going with some boost other than nitrous next year. I ride New York and Quebec so elevation isn't much of a factor. I usually ride between 1000 feet and 2000 feet.
I'm looking for a sled that I can have some power and pretty good trailability. I know about boost and Octane etc. I would probably run the most boost I could get away with at 93 octane....maybe 8 - 10 lbs??? Are the MPI S/C's adjustable for like 6 lbs up to 11 lbs??? How do you adjust them?
In my experiences, I have seen some ridiculously fast turbos but all of them seem to be racing sleds that really aren't reliable enough for trails. Almost everyone of them was very finicky. Most of the turbos that I have seen are running between 14 and 28 lbs of boost. I've never seen a Turbo running over 20 lbs run good. They always seem to spit and sputter and require some kind of adjustment. Most of my experience watching turbos run is from asphalt racing.
I saw a sweet FX Nytro last week up in Quebec running an MPI S/C and it looked stock and sounded stock and was very trailable as far as I could tell. That sled also flew.... It looked like it beat everything on the lake except for two big Yami Turbos and a S/C - Nitrous Cat F1000. It also could run back to back to back races without overheating. The turbos needed time to cool down between every race.
Anyway, it seems to me that S/C's are the way to go for many reasons. Why do most people run turbos? It seems to me that if I'm going to spend about $6000 what's the difference?

TURBO Takes no power to make power no belts or pulley to swap. I can just turn a dial for 6 psi up to 25psi!!! HA HA

Go turbo I have owned ! mcx apex turbo it was great for everyday trail riding good fuel mileage reliable and very fast down side was noise. I had a powderlite/ alpine turbo last year nothing but headaches from small issues constantly and I have a stage 2 MPI charger now that I am begining to hate. Fuel controller sucks on a supercharger making high boost try trail riding at lite throttle going say 50-60 mph and seeing 6-8 lbs of boost . boost is not needed but the fuel controller will not allow you to reduce the amount under lite loads because it is sensing to much boost for the transducer in the controller. It is a gas pig 70 miles to a tank riding with my wife 50 by myself. If I were starting a new build I think I would go with Simmons I feel he probably has the best kit period for flatland trail riding. Thats my opinion hope it helps.

I have2 buds that have mpis and neither are satisfyed fuel hog, no top end boost, hesitates and poor clutching, will get my mcx beg of next week but the demo I rode was unreal

i have an MPI supercharger on my RX1. while i had a bad pulley shipped with the kit that led to a bearing failure, i still have ridden it. This thing gets up and goes. No top end boost? at 60mph on hardpack i can pin it and the skis just pop right out of the snow. Not bad for a 162.
hesitates? I hit the throttle and im gone.
Poor clutching? who does the install? Thats where the clutching lies.
Fuel hog? For mountain riding i rarely go long distances each day so fuel consumption doesnt matter.
I love the power of the blower.
For all out power, a turbo is the way to go. If you want to set it and forget it, supercharger. Set it to 10lbs (91 octane for me) and forget about it.

I went with a CPR turbo this year, and love it. No problems run 10-12 boost on pump fuel, 80 to 90 mile to a tank. trail speeds are around 1-3 lbs boost then hold on when you open it up. S/C have fuel issues with the controller they give. My dad has one and switched to a Boondocker controller. We ride NY also. The S/C is nuts when it is done right. But flat landers have a different road to go down then mountain guys. Don't forget you will need a different fuel pump also with the S/C that they don't give with the kit. IMO Simons CPR all the way. You will love it. 8lbs the way it comes 230-240 hp on pump fuel. and NO Problems. (as long as the install is right)

Did 200 miles today in Quebec.
70 miles to a tank riding hard. 100 miles per tank when the arctic cat guy leads. half of the ride was on 87 octane (no super available)
You got to be able to run on the cheap stuff (without worrying) because it may be all you can get.
Tune your mpi right and its flawless. The best for long trail rides.

fuel m.g is about 80 at 1000` and i am running 12 psi. head shim stacked gaskets 1000 miles not problems.. zer hesitation over here.. it all comes down to getting the power to the ground in the end.. make sure you gotta great clutch guy! and youll do great. top end turbo. but ill take most turbos in 1000 feet untouched!

My vote goes to a Turbo
I still think the turbo makers like Simons CPR, MCXpress and others as well have the lead when it comes to build quality. Their kits have been out for a few years now so known bugs have been removed.
Questions on the SCs are starting to rise in #s here on the forum as more of them are beeing installed. I'm confident that bugs reported will be worked out by MPI.
I get 110-115 miles to a tank running my MCXpress at 16 lbs. I can easily turn down the controller to 10 lbs to run the cheap stuff if needed, or I can turn it up to 18 lbs or more running on racefuel.
Cruising on the lake at 55-60 mph I see 0 on the boost meter, giving it wot the boost goes 16 lbs in a split second with the skis in the air, yeeeeehaaaaa - hold on
Good luck on your decision, either way you can't go wrong. Boost is addictive, beware

If the simmons CPR header proves to hold up I would do that and this is coming from a long time MPI lover, I think the MPI woudl be good on a carbed sled but a Fi I think Simmons has it down, I'm wiaitng to see hos long those headers last and if they prove to be good ofr 5000-10000 miles my next project would include a Simmons turbo.

...i think MPI and MCX are at the top of the list when it comes to build quality.

Nice to have many options to choose from, it's all in the benefit of the buyer. Boost is the way to put power in a sled, it's allways there when you pull the trigger
