(Season 2008-09) TY Mileage – Yellowknife

Sleding Weekend Number 19 and 20 (Part Six)!

So Melanie and I were off to the tent after our Hearne Lake Lodge trip. Even though I joked about it in the video, there is no hot tub at the tent. I wish. We were fueled and ready to go…
P1040039.jpg

On the way in we went through trails that were burned out by a forest fire years ago…
P1040042.jpg

We stopped at Hidden Lake Gold Mine, to have a look at the remains…
P1040050.jpg

P1040043.jpg

And someone got a little silly…
P1040046.jpg

We hit the tent, dropped off our supplies and it was time for more riding through the afternoon…
P1040054.jpg

We headed to Thompson Lundmark Mine, another abandoned mine that was burned out years ago…and Melaine enjoyed the 4 person at once outhouse…
P1040053.jpg

She was fascinated by all the equipment, left in piles of wreckage…
P1040056.jpg

There’s even documents, dating back to 1941…
P1040060.jpg

And what’s playing in a mine site without risking it collapsing on you?
P1040063.jpg

Finally evening approached and it was time to head back to the tent…
P1040065.jpg

The next morning, it was time for Melanie’s surprise – a trip to Blackford Lake Lodge (http://www.blachfordlakelodge.com/)

But not before this happened…
P1040069.jpg

Oh yes – you HAVE to see the video…

i thought cats climb trees better than that.

LOL

The snow is gone, but there's still ice on the largest lakes.

Sleding Weekend Number 19 and 20 (Part Seven)!

Where NOT to stick your fingers when lifting up the front of an 800 pound bearcat.

So with Greg’s sled in the bush, we were busy to check exactly what was busted so we could decide how we were going to get everyone to the lodge and not have to send anyone home.

P1040068.jpg

While Greg was riding, a bolt for the a-arm broke off. The pressure on the remaining connected part of the a-arm caused it to break in half…
P1040070.jpg

When the bolt came out, we don’t know, we didn’t find it, there was nothing left, not even a bushing.
P1040071.jpg

It finally let go regardless and sent him and Mel into the tree’s.

We had to rig something up to get the sled back to the trucks since we were at the start of our trip and couldn’t continue with the bearcat. We started with a boggan pin…
P1040074.jpg

P1040075.jpg

That didn’t work, so we stole a bolt from an idler wheel and fit it in there…
P1040079.jpg

I’ve never seen an a-arm snap like this…
P1040077.jpg

Greg managed to ride it with the temporary fix back to the truck…
P1040078.jpg

But with a sled now down, we had 2 people to find a spot for. With no extra machine’s, we were about to try doubling people up and using an extra boggan we had as a method of transport…
P1040080.jpg

P1040081.jpg

P1040083.jpg

The boggan idea didn’t last as you’ll see in the video. So we dumped the boggan, and I doubled Greg on the Nytro while Mike doubled Mel on the Phazer. Mike and Mel did fine, but I was dieing with Greg on the back of the Nytro because he can’t balance himself standing let alone on the back of a tippy sled.

We got as far as Hearne Lake Lodge again, which was on the way, and decided to stop in for some options. Don had a boggan with a stand up grate at the rear, so we decided to try that…
P1040086.jpg

P1040087.jpg

It didn’t work either, the boggan was too narrow for the person standing out back on soft snow, so we ditched that idea. Now we put the two largest riders on the 2-up touring sled, I took Janice with me and that was far more manageable, but there was no room for another break down…

Sleding Weekend Number 19 and 20 (Part Eight – The Final Chapter)!

We’d arrived at the lodge after all that chaos and were happy to be there…
P1040088.jpg

I gave Mel a tour around the lodge…
P1040090.jpg

She was loving the animals!
P1040091.jpg

P1040093.jpg

P1040094.jpg

Greg was passed out, as usual. Maybe that’s how the sled went into the bush??
P1040095.jpg

We took a nice trip the next morning out to the East Arm of Great Slave Lake. Mike got stuck…
P1040099.jpg

And we passed through yet another abandoned mine site…
P1040102.jpg

Complete with housing…
P1040104.jpg

And a kitchen!
P1040105.jpg

Not much farther though is a new exploration camp for rare earth metals. They are so promising, that they are one of the few handful of exploration camps running in the north through these economic times…
P1040106.jpg

They revived an old truck and a tractor from the abandoned site we passed…
P1040107.jpg

And finally we were at the East Arm of Great Slave Lake…
P1040109.jpg

The pressure cracks were awesome…
P1040110.jpg

And looking through 5 feet of solid black ice ain’t bad either…
P1040125.jpg

At the cliffs, the war was on!
P1040118.jpg

P1040120.jpg

Massive ice, end to end…
P1040124.jpg

Then it was time to head back…and the ride was, well, back breaking for Greg on that touring sled…
P1040126.jpg

The next day, Greg, me and Mel headed out Caribou hunting…
P1040129.jpg

We didn’t get any. We seen 5, but they were too far away from the camera to take any video or photo’s. We drove all day long, and because nothing went wrong, it was a normal trip…which made it abnormal for us.

Enjoy the video!

good last adventure.

at least they know a good atv. looked like kodiaks at the bunkhouse.

Sleding Weekend Number 21!

After Mel’s visit was finished, the following weekend rolled around…this puts us at March 28, 2009.

I managed to get some of my best shots of northern lights. I use a consumer Panasonic Lumix camera with a wide angle lens for all my still photo’s you see on here. It’s been a solid camera and has the widest range of photo capability I’ve seen in a $300 camera. I drove out on the ice road on Great Slave Lake and away from city light pollution and shot these…enjoy!

P1040135.jpg

P1040137.jpg

P1040138.jpg

P1040139.jpg

P1040141.jpg

Back to sleding – myself, Nate and Sean trailered an hour to Behchoko, where we started riding the ditches along side the highway to Fort Providence. The snow was pristine, and deep…4 feet, which was fantastic…

P1040146.jpg

There was lots of getting stuck on this trip, and extended track length with paddles was an asset.
P1040149.jpg

Sean is the guy with the new E-TEC, and he had roughly 1000 km’s on it at this point and was very happy with it. Here, his ripsaw track simply didn’t cut it…
P1040151.jpg

Once in a while, we get a nice drift to ride over…
P1040169.jpg

P1040170.jpg

Carving through this stuff was awesome…
P1040171.jpg

There were some great spots to side hill a little too…
P1040173.jpg

Until you run out of gas…
P1040175.jpg

We were eating the fuel as we rode, all of us had the throttle to the bar all day long…
P1040176.jpg

The video explains how we do this type of trip, and it’s a trip I like to do annually.

More getting stuck…
P1040177.jpg

And cresting some banks…
P1040180.jpg

P1040181.jpg

P1040184.jpg

Now someone had some belt problems with super hot clutches…
P1040186.jpg

How many belts did you go through Nate?
P1040188.jpg

P1040189.jpg

And just a lot of jumping the sleds in the powder…
P1040192.jpg

P1040196.jpg

P1040200.jpg

P1040201.jpg

Nate took some great shots!
P1040202.jpg

P1040204.jpg

P1040205.jpg

P1040210.jpg

P1040211.jpg

P1040216.jpg

P1040218.jpg

It turned out to be a great trip, over 15 hours long.
P1040231.jpg

The video shows more, enjoy!!

I think Nate needs to spend the money on the kit to float his secondary...I would have dumped gas on my sled and put a match to it if I was grenading belts like that! :yam:
