Secondary belt height

The top of the belt is about 2-3mm in the secondary. I thought that the belt cord should be on top of the secondary. My Attak Gt runs great but I don't think it has the top end it had last winter. Would the belt placement in the secondary be the problem?

Belt height will not affect top end, only helps out of the hole. Think about it like a ten speed bike. But if your belt is that far down it may be worn enough to affect top end. I change mine at 2000 miles just for the hell of it but I now they will go alot longer, unless you abuse it alot, i.e. drag racing, aftermarket clutching, getting stuck and overheating it.

I checked my GT last night, found the same thing, down in the secondary and not above. Might be just that the secondary didn't shift back out 100% after i backed it into the garage? Will run it on the stand tonight and check deflection...

Be careful checking on the stand. It doesn't always give you a proper reading. On a stand my belt will sit below and if you are out riding and come to a stop it sits a little above. Not sure why !!!!!

I always make my belt as HI in secondary as it can be WITHOUT squeeling at idle.

NEW belts before any wear will need less washer shims....

as the belt wears in,you can add the 3 washers back into secondary, and usually you wont have squeel.

these are NOT like DOOS....where they sat so hi with cord showing.....typically the belts will sit flush or abit lower on apexs......

make it as hi as you can until she squeels, and your good.

hey Dan, on the secondary washers, do you just use the .05mm and 1mm yamaha ones or can you use thinner or thicker washers

Ive got a whole array of washers here..LOL.....and the belts wear alot initially,so i just keep an eye on the deflection, and keep her as tight as i can till she squeels...(man that sounds bizzare!)lol

thanks Dan, i just didn't want to try another size without asking someone, didn't want to wreck anything, so you can play around with different size washer to get the belt up high enough without squeeling

To set "Belt Height" correctly you take the belt out of the primary and lay it in the secondary w/o pressing it in. Then you should adjust the thicknesses of the washers on the three little bolts on the backside of the secondary to get the belt to set at or slightly above the top of the sheaves.

Yamaha has two thicknesses of washers. Typically you end up with one or the other, seldom both, unless the belt is out of or very nearly out of spec.

Here are the part numbers for the washers.

Item 9: 90201-061H1-00 WASHER, PLATE (T=0.5 mm)
Item 9: 90201-06037-00 WASHER, PLATE (T=1.0 mm)

If you get the belt too tight the belt will squeal when idling. The sled may even creep a bit. If it creeps, take out washers.

If using a brand new belt, I adjust the height until it squeals. Then after a couple hundred miles it is right on. Of course you need to shut off the sled, versus idling, if it is squealing. If you let it squeal very long you will overheat the belt. If you are doing a warm-up and it squeals, press the belt down in the secondary a bit to stop the squealing. But a cold belt typically does NOT squeal anyway. So if you know you are set tight, press the belt down for the warm-up. The other option is to take out washers and put them back in later.

Measuring belt height with the belt in the primary is a crapshoot.

You measure Deflection with the Belt in the Primary. Although Deflection and Belt Height are somewhat related, Deflection is a different measurement. Deflection is a check to see, given the right belt and secondary setting, if the distance between the Primary and Secondary (center-to-center) is correct. If the deflection was off and you have a spec. belt and the Secondary Belt Height is set correct, then an out of spec. deflection would be an indication that the sled's center-to-center may be off. You measure deflection halfway between the clutches with straight edge and a scale while pressing down on the belt. BTW: If the belt height is NOT set right or if the belt is out of spec, you can impact deflection.

Hey len,
I had just commented on same thing in another post cuz somebody was wondering why they had high pitch squeel at idle. A lot of people don't know about belt deflection I am getting into more of the adjustments and modifications as before I just used to fix when broke and ride that's it. But trying to learn more (been snowmobiling since 95'). I also noticed you live in Baldwin so if I get better by the end of the season I would like to get together and ride if you would like, since I'm in Muskegon and if I'm not riding in U.P. I ride in Irons about 1-4 times per season so just email me at BubbaGoFast@gmail.com if ur interested in getting together but I am injured right now so I can't ride yet.
