Hey guys, looking for some help with clutching issues. I took the phazer [mtx] out the the other day to look at what its doing at speed. I left the belt cover off so I could see what was shifting, and when. My primary is weighted to sea level and at about 12,100 rpm im hitting the rev limiter at about 52mph. My secondary is only shifting about half way. I took it off and cleaned it spotless and reassembled to the stock hole B1...same thing. Any thoughts on why it wouldn't be shifting all the way? I have tons of motor response...instant engine braking when i let off the throttle and instant power when I get on it.

Add more weight to your primary till you are at 11500 then your secondary will be used much more.Always control max rpm with the primary. And please dont run without your guard on.People have been seriously hurt by clutches.A magic marker line on clutch is all thats needed to safely tell where belt is riding with engine off.If all the holes in your primary weights are full you will need new weights. At that point I highly recommend the Ulmer Clutch kit or many have had luck with Schmidt bros.

hard to believe I need to add more weight. I have 2 of the heaviest rivets yamaha makes in both holes on my weights. This is stock weighting for altitude [sea level] per yamaha service manual and schmidt brothers advice, I'm running their stage 2 clutch kit. Could anything else cause these symptoms? Im gonna try new springs and take a look at the primary again and make sure the weights are able to open all the way out and rivets are not getting caught on the sides of the rollers or something. I've been told the way I have everything set right now I should do about 80-85 at 11,500 rpm wide open...

I dont get it.You have a Schmidt bros kit but it uses stock weights?I dont see how you could have possibly messed up the primary so my guess is you may not be putting the secondary together right?

Their mtx kit uses the stock weights...all their other phazer kits come with weights. Im confident the secondary was assembled correctly...but I know the kid that put the kit in initially (previous owner) didnt do it right the first time. He might have wrecked that spring...So i ordered a new one to eliminate that factor..and the primary spring was never changed even though it came with the clutch kit... so I ordered one of those...but whoever I talked to at schmidt brothers told me the primary spring is very similar to the stock spring but with lower engagement 3,000 instead of stock 4,300 so that shoudnt do anything major regarding my issue... top end and over rev

We'll see how this nightmare turns out after I pull it all apart again try new springs and double check everything... Secondary slides smoothly on helix ramps with no spring so nothing should be hanging up. :o| back to the drawing board

Thanks for the advice...keep it coming guys...anything im missing?

If the secondary spring were shot you would be dealing with low rpms and a huge bog opposite of what you have.I guess without seeing pictures of both primary and secondary I would just be guessing if you are confident everything is put together properly.Got a camera?

Just double cheking that the previous owner is running the correct belt? Just to eliminate that.

I am thinking might be when secondary was put together it was over wound.

maybe? That doesnt seem possible without a pipe wrench. Helix is about 5-10 degrees off from the ramps with springs in holes, just twisted enough to get it on the ramps. Should I be untwisting it to the ramps instead of tightening it towards them? New spring should be here today or tomorrow and I'm gonna tear into it this friday. Headed up to Marquette (even though its supposed to rain) buddy has a nice garage and we're gonna get her straightened out up there.

I am not sure but B1 is for mtx
maybe try less twist for low elevation?
sounds way to tight?

I am at B2 and it shits perfectly.

Did you check with SBM to see if you got everything you should have and was the right stuff?
