well hopefully the weather holds out, I'll be doing some riding regardless of the shifting issue...New secondary spring goes in tomorrow night hopefully that takes care of it. If not I'll be trying out the stock helix just to get back to step one and going from there... Im starting to think the secondary might be totaled...we'll see. The sled did take a roll of the trailer on the highway a few years ago and bent up the tunnel a little so that might have something (major) to do with it I know I didnt mention that one...but nothing about the clutches were mentioned on the post accident dealer repair estimate...

well...figured everything out. when the sled rolled off the trailer (the very beginning of this long saga) the front frame must have bent about an inch, the primary is about an inch too close to the secondary so there is too much slack in the belt. thus the belt not getting to the top of the primary...Does anyone have the measurement from the primary to the secondary so I can see how far its off? we'll say outside of primary bolt to outside of secondary bolt? I couldnt find this data in the service manual. The next question is I wonder if there is enough adjustment on the motor mounts to make up this massive amount of slack.
On a terrible somewhat related note, between last time i had the secondary off and now (about one day of riding) the circlip exploded and the back of my Schmidt bros helix is toast from grinding on some bolt heads. my ramps melted and some metal shavings seemed to have ruined my helix completely however I think the sheaves are salvageable with new ramps. Needless to say the old helix is going back in...Im bummed this happened but unfortunately even with the broken circlip the secondary and the sled ran the same or I would have noticed that something was wrong before i dove into it to look at it again. The main issue is the bent frame and clutch alignment.
This sled is cursed, but Im not ready to write it off as a total loss, and I dont think its sell able in this condition. I'd be lucky to get 1,000 out of it in this condition...I had to buy it for 3,000 when I rolled it off the trailer so I want to get as much out of it as I can to cut my losses. I want to get it somewhat fixed so I can try and sell it and get at least half of my loss back

The bearing behind the secondary usually heads south in the mix of this destruction.

I can get you a measurement after work.
Could you snap a picture of the damage?
Too many people are having problems with that circlip. I always change that circlip when I take it off.

So the sled dropped off the trailer? I know nothing about bent subframes but wouldn't that have to be fixed first before trying to get the clutches aligned, etc.Skionlrghills88 said:well...figured everything out. when the sled rolled off the trailer (the very beginning of this long saga) the front frame must have bent about an inch, the primary is about an inch too close to the secondary so there is too much slack in the belt. thus the belt not getting to the top of the primary...Does anyone have the measurement from the primary to the secondary so I can see how far its off? we'll say outside of primary bolt to outside of secondary bolt? The handling must be affected and other frontend components are probably compromised as well. It was probably damaged before you bought it??
Man the circlip again eh! I didn't heed warnings from good guys on here and the exact same thing happened to me after a year and destroyed my SBM helix and secondary as well. Very sad cause the helix was a very good upgrade too.

I agree the frame should be looked at. There are other things that may have been compromised as mentioned above.
I measured 11-5/8th from outside to outside, both on the "flat" edge of the bolts.

Maybe its just one of the motormounts that came loose or broke since the subframe would have nothing to do with c/c distance of clutch. Here is center to center distance. It also can be measured by going in between the sheave of primary and secondary. Will have to look for that measurement though.

Measured the distance between the clutches, 11in 5/8ths so within spec with above post...once again back to the drawing board on why the belt doesnt get to the top of the primary. At least nothing is bent in relation to clutch fore aft spacing. Saga continues...
Maybe take a bunch of pictures of your clutches. No possibility the belt is wrong?

Hi it won't go to the top of the primary, about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch from the top.

Belt options are 8gs newer, 8gk brand new and 8dn (nytro belt) bralnd new. All three act the same. Clutch is closing all the way with no belt, the weights arnt catching on rivets or something. Will get pics of everything soon, although everything looks normal to me when side by side with another phazer
