secondary question

As with all clutching its a give/take situation, In this case you would be putting more "wrap" or "angle" on the secondary spring with GIVES belt grip, Faster backshift, and Lower RPM. If you need any of those go ahead and try it BUT you will TAKE away some power to the track.

What do you NEED to change?
WOT RPM? then play with the 3 clutch weights in the primary with different rivets.
Backshift? they play with the secondary spring, like you asked about
Engagement rpm? then look into other primary springs or clutch weights

The secondary adjusts in 10 degree incraments. Starting at
C1=35 Degrees
A1=45 Degrees
B1=55 Degrees
C2= 65 Degrees
A2= 75 Degrees
B2=85 Degrees
And so on.

^^^ You're right, it's not so 'cut and dry' numerically like people think. That's why they call it testing.

I hope I am not hyjacking this thread, but is it possible for that spring to slip out of one position and into another? Or slip out all together?

My secondary gave way this weekend. What I mean is once the primary engages, the secondary almost instantly drops the belt as if at higher RPMs.

Of course, this means the sled just dogs up to 30-40mph and then is just fine. All low-end is gone as the secondary is not holding that belt up and just drops it. My guess is I broke the spring. Although it does return to the closed position when stopped.

I have not taken the secondary apart, but have a service manual. It still has warranty, I may just take it in.

Thanks for any help! I do appreciate it.

biff, no unless like you said, it broke. could also be the plastic ramps that pop into the helix.

no need to take it in. it's very easy to take apart.

24mm wrench to take off. set it on a bench. have another guy twist it to get the pressure off & take out the snap ring. careful, there is a washer too. then the helix comes out. pull the spring out to look at or adjust, then look at the ramps on the helix.

a guy at work & i did his in 5 minutes.

It did look easy as I had taken my SRX and SXR secondary clutches apart to clean and service in the past. I have been really holding off doing much on this one while it was under warranty.

I figured I paid for it, might as well use it if I can get it in and out. The dealer looked at mine yesterday before 11am! I was pleasantly surprised. THey said that spring was all jacked up. They did have to order one.

From what I can tell, it is a $15 part, so it won't be too bad if Yamaha doesn't want to cover it. I'm thinking they cover the whole power train except the belt. I will find out tomorrow night when the part is installed.

Thanks for the response!
