I don't think that you should have an oily mess. That's only if pressure builds up due to the plugged breather hose. With the slit in the hose, there shouldn't be a chance pressure being built up therefore there shouldn't be an oily mess unless you are getting a lot of crankcase blowby. Please correct me if I'm wrong and thanks for posting a picture of the actual place to make the slit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the slit in the hose that's in the airbox? What do we do if we're using the K&N Kit? My guess is that we won't have the problem because the small filter won't be in the path of the incoming cold intake air. What's everybody's thoughts?

yes the slit is on the hose inside the airbox, but you will have the problem even with the kits, but i suspect only at super cold temps, for instance it was a consistant -30 at night here last weekend warming to -15 durring the day. im not sure is the filters added to the freezing but im sure as hell going to cutting some slits or holse in that tube as i dont want that happening again

I noticed when I took the airbox off of an 04 there was ice inside the small hose on the right hand side(sitting on the seat) underneath the air box. What is this hose for?

Freezing vent hoses
I stopped at Gregoire Sports in Joliette,Que. last weekend and asked about cutting a slit in vent hose in the airbox. They said it was on a service bulletin and they do them when customers bring their sleds for service. They also cut the hose on the bottom at the high point. One sled had this failure last year and the 03 & 04 both have the same issue.Cutting the slit on the bottom allows moisture to drip out and not freeze in the vent line. GT

I thought when you put on the filter it almated the stock slit.
Cut one in the little hose if you have put the ecp kit to emelate the problem.

I have an 04 RX1, and it did not come with a slit in the hose. the dealer made the change when i had it there for first service, you will still get oil in the airbox and ice build up on the filter near the hose.

Not all 04's are done, it is based on serial number and was an update applied in the middle of production.

The crancase filter that freddie sent w/package will plug up w/oil and moisture,if not cleaned on regular basis, cause mine is somewhat blocked, and because of this is causing pressure to build and send more oil by the rings, than if the pressure was normal, just a thought, now if someone was to run a plumbing fiting into bottom of each air filter K n N and screw the fitting into bottom of filter and attach a hose to each and connect to a T fitting back to hose line that now has the little round breather filter on,it would put gas's back thru air filter and into the carbs like the stock set up did,and we wouldent have to worrie about cleaning this little guy again, and have it plug up when it is not clean! Now most of us dont have an oil usage problem, but some of us do,and this would just help, and you could also attach the little 1/4 hose to filters as well, just my 2 cents, any other ideas?

Well I caught a bunch of hell from Sketr (Dukester) for not doing this update last week. We were riding down some perfectly groomed trails in 40 below weather and my oil light came on. I stopped the sled immediately and Sketr asked if I had done the update. Uh, nope. There was ice in both ends of the hose, as well as on the filter. We put the slit in the hose and added a liter of oil. Problem fixed.
I stored the sled that night in a gas station garage so I wouldn't have to jump start it again. The next day riding 50 miles across the lake and no problems. The following day, the light came on again in 27 below (32 below C) weather and there was ice in the tube again. The slit in the hose is not working.
Boy did I hear a bunch from the Polaris riders we were with about Japanese engineering.
