Shoot out on OTIS Reservior,. what a day!!

Now guys i was not there, but in all fairness to freedies kits and to team rear clutch, tuning is the answer.BUT no way trail studs compare to thrusters, now i will say this in the trails, that most of us run,the team, and air kit rule,it is between upshift/backshift that the team excells, and if it has not been played with, for optium results than,it may go slower than stock, same goes for the airkit if not set up properly, either fatter jetting w/needles mains, pilots etc. you get the picture, and yes gearing/primary clutching. Now yesterday my cousins stock w/reverse came out and ran off the line equal w/ mine but after 1,000 ft.i could roll on him, past 125 on speedo, but we were shutting down by than, both of us have carbide studs, but half of his are chizzles to,and he could pull me off the line, now we could all say hh dont work either but in the trails,on snow you can hook harder w/that clutch set up,thank you all who ran there yesterday, extra thanks go to otis for seting things up,and freedie for helping us w/his exsperiance from his dyno. 8)

:D Thanks to all you guys.
No where else do you hear / read of such cooperative sharing of info. This to me is more about Yamaha enthusiasts getting together with a generous host to have fun and it sounds like all but the swimmer ( man that is a rough lesson to learn about the importance of local lake knowledge, blessing all are ok) had fun than a true test of the filter set up.
Thanks for the fun, Boy I wish it would snowwwwwwwwww.

  OTIS that was great set up you had yesterday.SRXMAGICK introduced me to you i was with the two girls and the fellow with the 800ho. He has studs 192 1.175 woody's we just can't get it to hook up. I was killing him and loving every minute of it. They radared me at 111 and i was happy cause the wind was blowing in my face and the guy with the gun said it was slowing me down. My sled is totally stock and i'll be there for the next gathering. If you guys are looking for a test mule i'll supply the mule. THANX once again. 8) 8)

Ross,

Thanks for all the hospitality! Your sled runs very well. I ran you with my silver RX-1. I wish I had gotten there sooner as I missed a lot of the action. Who was that at the end of the day with the ZR900? Stock or any work to it? Just curious. Looked like a 2004 model. Let me know when the next get-together is. My plow is always available.

Erik

Oh yeah.....

I thought my Silver machine was running quite well. I know I got there late but the only "trail" RX-1 that beat me was Otis RX. And that was a good race. I need a little more somewhere.......

Next time I will bring my SRX to give Dave B. a run for his money......hey Kid.....you hear me?

Dave, thanks for the help putting my Primary together. I will be in touch and we can get together for some more testing.......

Erik

  I don't think there was any work done to that ZR9 my RX beat it easily and when i tried to run him again he wouldn't line it up.

I'll try and keep this short and sweet. There was not a trail set up (not talking Dave Burnham's set up, yes he was fast off the line but max'd out at 660', so what does that mean for the average joe trying to make his trail friendly RX-1 perform better?? You tell me?) He wouldn't go from a roll to discard the 240 chisels. But there is one of my 2 points!! Hook up!! Clutching is the other.
Not one was faster top end, or close in mid range. I raced them all! From a roll none went by me. I pulled 2-3 sleds and stayed there. It's the secondary! Dave's did pull the hole shot!! It rocked!! Absolutely!!
It's clutching and hook up boys. Pure and simple ..clutching & hook up!!
The TEAM secondary I'm running with the 58-38 .46 helix along with the Heel Clicker primary, is what made the sled run. Nothing else! There was nothing else!! Ride Blue had a TEAM but with a 46-38 flat rate. That helix is a dog for this kind of comparison. I'm running 58-38 .46 progressive. You can't touch it for low end to mid range. Remember, with stock gearing or even one tooth down on top, they all run the same on top after a mile.
Knock yourself out with all the hipe.
Those that were there know what happened.
Otis

Well, I stayed up late lastnight to wait for Otis RX post. When it was posted, I was very disappointed. I thought the air kit would have showed better. I was convinced after all of the testing during the last month the kits were the real deal. I was on the rode all day today and did not get to my email. After logging on this evening it seems there was more to the story of the shootout at Otis. Fact, the fastest sleds were the ones with the kit. I would like to say one thing, if you do not like the kits, that is your choice. We are all standup guys here. I would appreciate a true and accurate account of what happened the first time and not have get the real story in later posts. I had to wait for Freddies's post to find out this information. We all want the truth. If you can't handle the truth don't race and waste our time with a partial account of what happened. Take it to amsnow. No one is getting rich with all of this testing. I was told that Red RX1 took you by 5-6 sled lengths right off of the line. I guess the kits work. What more proof do you need. I'm sold.

Hi BOSTON RX.......... I won't be able to say anything to help. Please do what you feel is best. That's what makes this all the more fun.
Please let me know if and when you have your's set the way you're happy. Come on out and convince me. Or I'll come there !
I'm not going to further challenge what others are posting.
Everyone that was here saw what happened!
I'll keep mine the way it is.
OTIS RX

I am not a lake runner and speed does nothing for me. So for me to come there or you come here, it would prove nothing. This is the last I am going to view or post on the subject. Have a great winter.

Otis...you don't need to say anything to try and help anyone. You have a good running sled and impressed most to all that were there. But please do not try to convince everyone that was there and saw with their own eyes that what they saw was wrong. Both the Quickest and the fastest RX1's there had Air Kits on them. I could go on with some other observations but it will do nothing to help either so I will not state them.

But...here is the deal everyone. There is a lot of different ways to get down the other end. Look at NHRA. Do you think any 2 Top Fuel, Nitro Funny car, Pro Stock car or Pro Stock bikes are going down the strip with exactly the same setup? Of course not! With a lot of luck that would never happen! And yet there are times that all 16 qualifiers are are separated by literally tenths when qualifying is all over! I will give you a for instance...

The increase in power from my Air Kits corrects a very offending torque line. Now being that the CVT driveline is torque reactive and not RPM reactive, the air kit improves not only HP output but also clutching efficiency in that our torque line looks like it is drawn with a protractor instead of the very offending stock airbox torque line that looks like a set of "stairs" with steps and peaks and valleys throughout the entire rev range. The worst offending area of the powercurve is from 4000 to 6000 RPM's and then another one from 8200 to 9500 RPM's. What this means to the clutching is that at one steady throttle setting by the rider, the clutching thinks that the rider is lifting the throttle and opening the throttle throughout the entire powerband. This makes the clutches upshift and backshift constantly while the rider is at one steady throttle setting. Not exactly the most efficient way for clutches to act. The best idea is to get the clutch to engage, upshift in a steady and consistent manner relative to the torque level of the engine and then back shift at the end of the run when the rider lifts the throttle. Make sense? I thought so.

Now, you could mask these imperfections with clutching and make them less apparent. If the stock sleds at Otis resevoir are indeed stock, then I commend you for finding that sweet spot for clutching and a gear ratio to compliment the clutching. But in my world this is a "Band-Aid". To mask the inherent problems that every RX1 has versus fixing them like the air kit does to me is a cop-out. I think it is safe to say that this is proven by the fact that several of the sleds at Otis resevoir this weekend with air kits blew the tracks away when trying to leave from "the dig" in a dragrace. The increase of power at low end and midrange overpowers the track and causes you to make snowcones out of the ice you are racing on. It takes 100 pennies to make a dollar and the increase in power on a frozen "ice only" lake needs to be complimented by major dragrace style studding to realize the true benefits of this simple inexpensive modification.

Here is the only way to test ANY mod...take the test sled in stock form with the best clutch setup you could throw at it. Put it on the clocks for Elapsed time and MPH. Then put the air kit on and run it with the same clutch setup. Then begin tuning the clutching and jetting and traction to realize the true potential of the Air Kit. Then look at your time slips and see what making more HP in less time does for you. This timing system needs to have 60 foot times, 330 foot times and 660 foot times as well as MPH.

With lake racing there are too many variables. You have people willing to lie about what they have done to their sleds in some cases, you have different traction setups, different clutch setups, and lots more. You have people unwilling to open their hoods all day. That is why sanctioned racing has tech... to keep it fair for all the participants. If I was to show up with one of my $30,000.00 tubular frame Open Mod dragsters with an RX1 engine in it and crushed everyone, everyone would say it is an unfair advantage. And, I will agree. I brought a gun to a gun fight and everyone else brought knives and sticks.

If there is any interest in setting up a timing system this elaborate and doing a proper test, I will donate the time and parts required to for the Air Kits. I suspect that the purportedly stock RX1's would have blown the track away as well with my air kit on them. All of them except one...Dave Burnham's red RX1...which was the quickest and fastest on the lake out of EVERYONE...and he has an air kit.

Shoot out on OTIS Reservoir,. what a day

Just wanted to say that I ran my RX1 this weekend in -20 degrees and it ran perfect. It pulled like a freight train. No burble or hesitation at any speed. Throttle response was unbelievable. I don't think I need any more power than what I have now. I have silver springs and 165 jets. Totally satisfied with K&N kit and am positive my sled is quicker now.

Hey Supertuner I am willing to be a guinea pig if you ever get in to the Maine area look me up. I would be willing to use my friends radar gun and setup a track for 60 330 660 and 1000 foot times. I can set it up by the lake so we can try it stock then stock with clutch kit if you have one we can put on. Then stock with air kit and finally air kit and clutch. Same traction motor rider etc. Either way I have owned alot of sport bikes and I have had a lot of Jet kits, including several with similar filters . I know about dyno work alittle. I know these kits make a difference especially in Mid range power. Plus I am used to spending 800-1000 dollars for 5-10 HP on my sportbikes. This to me is a small price to pay for a better smother running sled. Then add the clutch for better performance.
