Shootout

Well, I dont put any faith in the "Shootout" due to the fact that these sleds are run prior out in the fields with dealers adjusting away at different setups.
Your right on that. Tom at Arctic Adventures was running that mach on the grass many times prior to the shootout. He has a 1000foot run that he was running.

I have said it before and I will say it again, Ease of steering is not the only benefit of EPS. The shock and vibration transmitted through the bars is drastically reduced. Fatigue is reduced.
I don't think EPS was added to mask any inherent handling shortcomings.
I am not sure how many here are old enough to drive cars without power steering but the feedback through the steering wheel, positive and negative, is much more without power teering.
Anyone here who drove a manual steer four-wheel drive truck through the mud and had his elbow slammed into the side window, or thumb twisted in the steering wheel, after hitting a rut or rock knows exactly what I am talking about.
Driving the Apex EPS one handed through a choppy trail with no bar feedback showed me what EPS was really about.
How many people drive 4 wheelers without EPS after having one with. Almost nobody.
EPS is a benefit well worth the minimal weight gain for the average trail rider.

Just my opinion though
Man, you just reminded me of my 74 Maveric I had from 82-84. NO power steering, NO power (4drum) brakes, "Three in the Tree", NO radio, and a heater core barley big enough to defrost the windshield.....we've come a long way baby!........sorry to post off topic

D
Pretty much this. Power steering isn't a band-aid to an improperly set up suspension. It is a technology that allows for suspension settings that improve the overall ride and handling of the sled. Suspension setup has always been a balance between transfer, understeer/oversteer, and steering effort. Power steering simply removes one of the variables (steering effort) and permits suspension settings that would otherwise be unacceptable in its absence.
Agreed. I have been riding big heavy cats since 1993. Never had a problem getting them to steer, handle, or ride well. For example, Dual carbides and good skis eliminate darting pretty well.

I have to agree, yes we had plenty of none P.S. trucks and cars when i was young,so i do remember, they were harder than powersteering we now have, but we did not mind, because most than had no powersteering to compare it to.

Even though this is off the Original Post Topic, i'm in the middle on this Power Steering issue.
I've spent plenty of $$$ and time trying to get sleds to handle good & some, like my first Apex, were ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL to ride.
But i figured them all out & never needed the PS after that.
30 pounds & loss of a gallon of fuel means a lot to ME. Maybe not others.
The Apex i understand, but the Sidewinder i don't.
DON'T GET ME WRONG!
I think it's a great option to have, just not for me.

AND like STAIN said, it's NOT about ease of steering, but an OVERALL better ride.
I like options so i hope they give the non-PS option also.

Some like Red Heads...............................i like Blondes..............................and Brunettes.......................maybe even a Strawberry Blonde.....................Latin......................Mix....................Heck i'll even take a Red Head with Brown Eyes

BUT NO RED HEADS...................................or Power Steering for me

So these dealers get to test their sleds first?
Cuz if that's true, then those DOO boys really messed up. Standing a sled up looks impressive, but is actually the OPPOSITE of what is needed in an event like this.

I don't put much stake in an event like this, but it does give some clues.
Trail sled to Trail sled, I personally believe the new 900R is gonna get away in the beginning simply because of transfer & more throttle response, but then the Winder will catch it on top.
With 70 pounds less weight, maybe 5 less HP, better transfer; i think the Winder is gonna have to REEL me in.
If that's the case then i'll only run short races.
Stick & Move kids, Stick & Move.
Don't Box a Boxer, don't Wrestle a Wrestler and DON't mess around with Jim. (song)

I should be on the BEDS Tuesday & will post that night. Although i won't be with any Winders.
Getting close kids..........Getting close

P.S: Name the Song..........no cheating!

Only 30 lbs. lighter than Tcat or SRX. I can't wait to race the Mach at any distance on ice or hardpack snow.

I found the stock Sidewinder as smooth with great ride and pretty hood handling, but not quick or fast enough for my liking! The MS tunes did change that!
So I would certainly need more from any Doo 900T to make me happy!

Loss of a gallon of fuel ? Is the tank smaller on the power steering models ?

on the Apex, yes.
I got into some unfamiliar and poorly marked trails in N.H. on my EPS Apex. Ran it out of gas. That was the beginning of the end for me on that sled. Nothing worse than staring at your fuel gauge for half the day.

My sled was EXACTLY 72 lbs lighter then my old Sidewinder when i personally weighed them.
Both 137'' Ripsaw2 tracks with 96 studs.
Both FULL of ALL fluids including 2 burps to fill gas. Winder holds 1 more gallon.
I removed everything else except spare belt.
Both have hand guards & higher windshields.
We put on his stock skis so it lost 4 pounds.
So my Adrenaline is EXACTLY 68 lbs lighter.
The Mach may weigh a few more pounds due to shocks.
We tested both my scales & did it 3 times each to be sure.

Not that i think it matters cuz i still believe the Winder will take it on top but have to wait another week.
Cancelled this week so next Thursday i should know.

I already told my bud if he beats me to 660, i'll set him up with a Red Head.
I don't like Red Heads anyways. So it's a win win!

P.S: He AIN't beatin' me to 660
