Simple clutch set-up

If you XTX guys were experiencing the same things as me; With the stock 2014 XTX set-up, the sled was hitting the rev limiter quickly ans then after it flatten to 8700 to come back at 8400 up top.

Then you might try this simple fix:

-Replace the helix for 8BVFA(51-43) = no more rev limiter -> 8700
-B-W-B primary spring = more rpm up top right at 8800-8900

Please take note that I am 140lbs w/o gear, but it worked really well for me. It rpm's like a good set-up Nytro should be.
The sled pull harder and use more torque for acceleration and use all the rpm's it need for high speed.

Hope it will make your ride better like it did on mine.
 
The problem is the 8GL have a bump in the base that causes higher revs at take off. You can work around it but in my opinion you need a clutch kit or if you are a do it yourselfer you can do it with flat or even angle weights. I suggest one of TY vendors kits or look up top under "just the facts" for "clutching on the cheap"
 
That's strange yours was hitting the rev limiter quickly, the few local guys I know and myself included were actually getting low rpm with stock clutching, granted mine wasn't ridden only 80-100 miles with stock clutching but best I ever seen was a whisker under 8700 and never hit the rev limiter. I guess once it broke in it may have hit the limiter as I did need to add some primary weight again around 500 miles. Are the secondary's on these all coming wrapped the same? You'd certainly think so but the variation in all the clutch stuff sure seems like there's more going on

Nice job!!! Many different approaches to clutching sleds and if your happy then that's all the matters.
 
Every XTX in my part of the world had the hitting the rev limiter problem, my wife's included.
I then spent to much time on here and took the lazy way out, I tried a clutch set up touted on here as the cure all, it was supposed work from sea level to 40000 ft, find HP, fix the hot start issue and even cure warts and the common cold.
Well after spending $89.60 per weight for 8FS weights and $32.60 for a green white green spring I flushed over $300.00 + down the toilet on a clutch set up that gave me a 4500 engagement and proceded straight to pinging of the rev limiter, the sled couldn't beat a Phazer.
This set up was worse than the stock Nytro MTX's guys are buying in this part of the world.
I went back to my set on my Nytro and worked from there.
At the end of the season I could beat a Viper with exhaust mods by 5 lengths in 600 ft.

And no I will not share my clutch set up.
My set up has come from 40 + years of playing with Yamaha clutches and to many Thousands of dollars spent on clutch parts and I don't know how many thousands of hours spent tinkering.
FREE ADVICE IS USUALLY NOT WORTH WHAT IT COST.
 
Should have used the 8FP weights, not the 8FS weights. 8FS weights are too heavy for 0-4000

True statement, most of the time your probably better off just buying the kit ready to rock, unless that is, you have a disposable income and time to waste.

Or time to play/learn depending on how you look at it. I have learned a ton in the "getting there" process and have a ball while doing it.
 
Guess I would just rather be putting miles on my sled than working on it. I don't mind tinkering with things but not during riding season. And when else can you test.

Strange you state your 40+ years of clutch setup and did not know you need to add weight if you are hitting the rev limiter. Did you add weight to get the revs where they need to be and test it? Not every sled needs the same weight in the clutch, and with the Viper it seems to change as it breaks in. Sorry you are the one person this did not work for.

There lots of ways to fix over rev, steeper helix, less torsion on the helix, smaller diameter rollers, lower primary spring rate, shall I go on.

No I just wanted to know if you set correct weight for your sled before ditching the setup, and what weight that was.
 
Never did add the shim, engadement was already high, around 4500, backed the secondary off to the point it did not back shift, still pinging the limiter.
