I recently bought a 2008 Phazer MTX. It ran like a top for the first few rides
and throughout the break in period. Now that it has got colder (below -20 C), I cannot get it to start. I turn the key and it just backfires. I do not have a heated garage but it is always covered. The battery is fully charged and I have tried gas line antifreeze. Has anyone else had any problems like this?

Have you had the starter update done? Check for punch marks next to your vin number.

i have read that some say to cycle the key couple of times before trying to start

Yeah if i'm having trouble i usually do that.

Still not running-Starter update?
What is the starter update that you mentioned? When it try to start my sled it turns over like crazy, i can also here the fuel pump come on. I can smell fuel and i got spark. I've tried everything, now I got it tarped it up and I got a propane heater going under it.

sounds like you have some issues there bud !!! My phazer rtx fires up at minus 30 celcius no sweat !!!

There's a cold starting recall from Yamaha. I'm not exactlly sure what it is, but I think they richen the fuel injection when cold and install a new spring of some sort. Anyhow, it's a free service, just call your dealer and ask to make an appointment for your Phazer recall. If your dealer is worth a sh%#, they'll know precisely what your talking about and take care of you.
In the mean time, I also just pop the air box cover and give her a TINY shot of starting fluid and she starts right up. Once warmed up, no problem.

finally got her going
Just wanted the thank the guy who suggested unplugging the fuel pump to clear out the flooded gas. It worked. I also checked my oil tank, and my level was way above normal and smelled like gas. I changed the oil, thawed it out in the shop, it fired right up.
Has anyone heard of a four stroke flooding so bad that it fills the crank case?

Yes have seen it many times in our shop on both snowmobiles and ATVs. Just last week we had a quad that was so flooded that when we drained the oil...or should I say gas lol it poured out like water.
When it is very cold you are best to cycle your fuel pump three or four times before trying to start you machine. If it does not start just let go of key....do not switch it to off postion...and try again. Most no start issuies have to do with poor fuel...atleast that is what we have found.

The way the start system works is, it'll crank until
there is good oil pressure, then it will fire, problem is
at cold temps it may not trigger the pressure switch
early enough or at all.
But the cold start update, allows for ignition at a lower
oil pressure,
