Well to begin, I have the best wife ever, she ordered a MCXPRESS 190 turbo kit for me for Christmas. BUT, the dealer sent us an MPI 190 kit by mistake. The thing I don't understand is, it has a Yamaha part number on it, isn't that particular kit called the 180 kit? And doesn't the 190 kit have an intercooler? The part number is sma-8jp17-00-tb

Anyway, please someone straighten this out for me.
Thanks so much

Send it back and get the MCX kit - its the best kit out there

I'll start this with - In my opinion.

If its a decision between the MCX and the MPI kit there is no question that the MCX kit is head over heals better kit on many points. The only weak spot with the mcx kit is the fact they use the stock injectors - it could use more fuel on the top when pushing boost, but even saying that the fuel controller with the MPI kit doesn't hold a candle to it. I've done quite a bit of turboing the past number of years - Installed several kits on the viper, but stayed clear of the MPI kit after investigating it.

One of the biggest advantages is the install - its way easier, and nothing lost going that way.
The quality of the mounting brackets and oil lines, the way mcx installs there is very little chance of problems down the road.
Muffler is quiet as stock with the standard kit and flows enough to still make power at high boost levels. If you decide to turn it up, I've purchased a inter cooler from MPI, and used a power commander with larger injectors and is a very affordable way to get 250 hp
MCX uses a real Mitsubishi t16 (t19 on the 270 kit) turbo that makes good power and is cheap to repair down the road.

Now if comparing the MCX to the Hurricane kit - its a much harder comparison - because where one has downs - the other has ups and the downs of either kits are not really that big of deal.
If you were to purchase either kit, you would be very happy. I must say the best part of Hurricane's kit is his fuel mapping and the larger injectors with the PCV, he nailed the fueling with it. His quiet muffler is really quiet as well.

Would like to see you clarify that with facts, not trying to start a war just curious how you came to that conclusion.

Both have proven kit's and have been around for a very long time.
So have i so i know of things that makes me never choosing MPI, period.
You guys never switch sleds when sledding with friends running other kit makes?
There are significant diffrence in power output, it's not 180 vs 190hp, hard for me to prove since i don't have dyno# on MPI turbo, and if i had i could never publish it, MPI would have it removed.
Curious what boost level MPI run their "180" kit @ ?
Since they use a inferior charger their kit produce less hp @ same boost, but from what i've heard it can't be the whole answer, it must run lower boost also.

A well designed kit can produce power @ pretty low boost level, i'm quite happy with my MCX kit, 280hp @ 0.92bar/13.34psi and only turning 8900rpm, will rise rpm limit and dyno it again.

Good points, especially the install. I went MPI on the girlfriends sled because of the no lag and Yamaha approved. You can't tell hers has a turbo from the outside or riding it other than much more power. I went EVO on mine because I wanted the best parts and most features I could get,

1. Hardware is amazing bullet proof maybe even to heavy built
2. Water to air intercooler
3. water cooled turbo
4. Switch on dash goes 210hp to 275hp with flick of switch even on the go. Pump gas on 210 setting, 100ll on high
5. Turbo flash get same rev limiter to 9750 so I can do one clutch setting for both modes (around 9000 rpm on 210 and 9600 on 275)
6. Turbo flash rev limiter increase also raises horsepower approx. 10 horsepower due to increase revs. So kit is actually 220/285 with flash
7. Kit comes with injectors and external fuel pressure regulator
8. high boost does not require head shim (head bolts recommended though)
9 INSTALL AND RIDE, no screwing around with fueling
10. Adjustable clutch kit complete with 40/46 helix (although I wet with BOP spring anyways)
11. A quick call to EVO gets means support I need from the manufacture.

That doesn't mean yours isn't the best for you but for me the EVO was best, and the MPI was best fit for our other sled.

I ride over 10k altitude, would love to see the MCX 190 kit versus the MPI at that altitude with the MPI having the EABC boosting it to 8 pounds boost instead f the 4.5 it is set at for sea level. Would be an interesting comparison.

How loud is the evo muffler

About this time last year when the mpi trail turbos were getting a lot of attention I seen a video of one being tested at dynotech, it was a legitimate test with a dealer installed kit on a brand new out of the box sled, there was also a bone stock brand new viper that got dynoed the same day. Comparing the box stock n/a hp to the box stock turbo hp the trail turbo made just a touch over 10 hp per # of boost, it was 175 hp at 4.5 pounds, bone stock sled was 126 or 127 hp.

EVO small muffler I have is louder than stock but not loud enough to get me in trouble. MPI muffler sounds just like stock

I personally think the mpi muffler is even quieter than stock which is great. Seems very restrictive once you turn the power level up though, but for the low boost trail kits it's great!

I didn't even consider mpi. Hurricane or MCX was her choices. Hopefully the dealer takes responsibility for the f-up.

One more question, the dealer sold her an autometer boost gauge as well. What's the verdict on those? Should I keep it?
