So, i picked up this Rx-1 this last summer and have been up 3-4 times. It's a mountain. Yesterday we had a big snow day, 3-4 feet of fresh. I rode with two 06' Revs, an rx-1, another yami 4 stroke, and a few mountain vipers.
Of all of us, the 4 stroke's had the worst time, we were constantly stuck, granted, i'm a new rider so i figured it was just my skills (or lack there of) that got me there. A few people rode my sled to see for themselves how the 4-stroke performs and they themselves got stuck also.
I rode one of the ski-doos (151" track) and it felt like a totally different story. I rarely got stuck and was able to ride to the potential that i felt i should be at.
I'm about 215 lbs. with a 25 lbs. pack. I think i want a 2-stroke.
What say you? Should i just give it more time to learn how to ride the 4-stroke? Or should i drop it and get a two stroke?
Thanks in advance.

Don't give up! My first ride this spring with my new 03 RXM (left over sled bought new in 05), came over from a Summit. Hated my first trip, ready to pack er' in. Struggled through it and things got better, somewhat. (only my 3rd season mountain riding, well actually ever on a sled). Next trip totally different story, changed to 05 skis (BIG improvement), added 5" riser and throttle cable, changed clutching to 8dn (as recommended by your support group here). Loved it, in the trees - better, pulling hills - better. Rode with M7 and MM and went everywhere they did and then some. Only guy not to get stuck until the last day! Had to learn to stay on the throttle, but I am very happy with my purchase (was going to buy a Rev). This falls changes are new skid, new seat, new exhaust, ecp kit and sway bar. Can't wait to hit the snow! I will never go back!
Enjoy the fact that you will always come home with fuel in the tank and you will always tow out and rarely if ever be towed out!

Im honest when i say i love my RX-1 mountain, but it sucks at the same time. Mine loves to trench, and it does it very well.
I think all my sled needs is a 162" track to shine. It has plenty of power to turn the 151, it just doesnt float. If i dont get an apex next season, im getting a 162" track and a Holz Rear, or a turbo so the 151 can build enough speed to get out of some spots
Its not all riding ability to keep from getting stuck. If you are worried, get a Ski Doo RT 1000 162 and outclimb anything on the snow. My friend has one and in a race i can take him, but in a hillclimb he goes miles further than i do.

If you can't keep up or beat the 2 strokes on the RX1....Well, no offense but you need to learn to ride better. No 2 stroke can hang with me.

What have you done to your 2003? 3 things at a minimum in my opinion must be done to an 03 or 04 mtn sled before you even ride it.
1. Ditch the stock skis if you already haven't for some wider skis (Simmons, Powder Pros, or the new Yamaha mtn skis) This will get the front end up on top of the snow. The Yamaha skis are the widest.
2 and 3. Call Mtn Performance and order the transfer kit and a 2" riser for the handlebars.
Bottomless 'sugar' snow on Rabbit Ears pass the first year I had the 2003 had me frustrated as well. You have to learn how to use the throttle on this sled (engine braking). If you instantly let off of the throttle it will not free wheel like a two stroke. Learn how to gradually let off of the throttle to compensate for the engine braking. (That is why your buddies got stuck too when they tried it)

tmk,
Since i bought it, i've put on a lefty throttle, SLP Powder Pros, and a 6 inch fly riser. For the transfer kit, i'm new to sledding, what does it do? what's the purpose?
As for lack on skill, this is my first sled. I think the main factor for sledding is the instinct that is involved in what you need to do. Thus far, i do not have that instinct, so i would agree with you that i need to get better. This was my first true powder day though.

Where are you located?
mine was the same, until I put a Ekholm tunnel with drop and roll, Ekholm 159" rear suspension and 2 1/4 finger track on it.
I am never stuck, I am 6'5 325, and after you put on NOS or a supercharger, you will NEVER think of going 2 stroke again.

The transfer kit is the cheapest way to upgrade the rear skid to perform like the newer sleds (and the other mfgs)
The stock 03 skid is 'coupled' meaning that the front and rear shock compress and rebound together for the most part. (you can adjust this using the transfer rods). The transfer kit removes the rods and 'un couples' the two shocks so they can work independently. This alows for increased weight transfer when you punch the throttle. This means that the front end will be lighter and more weight will be transferred to the rear of the sled. This should allow you to plane out quicker in powder and stay on top of the snow instead of plowing through it.

The 03/04 mtn skid is not the best. They are a trenching monster. I would get an aftermarket skid. I like the AC skid I put in. Very low approach angle which helps keep the sled on top of the snow. Ask Trxster about his sled. He can keep up with the 800 and 900 2 stokes now. Here are a couple good threads to get you back in the mood to keep your sled. With a little help these sleds are awesome and you can't beat the durability.

if i get on my friends Summit 1000 162 and he gets on my Mountain, he cant keep up with me and he is one of the best riders out here.

So, here's my plan, i guess i'll just ride it out the rest of the season, learn the basics of the sled, if i like it, i like it. If i don't, learning to ride a hard sled will make riding an easier sled that much better.
PS: How much is an 03' Rx-1 mtn. w/ 4500 miles on it worth anyways?

You can go buy an 800 rev and look like everyone else on the hill, or you can spend the same money on lightweight parts, get to know your machine (mechanically), and end up with a reliable, great handling, sled that turns heads, is one of a kind, and will out-perform any 800 and some 900's. When I was climbing this past weekend my son heard some fellows at the bottom mention they heard my blow-off valve. My sled's engine is bone stock.
