barn yard farmer fix .. if nothing left to salvage of that housing , grind off flush
and find a set of correct flangette bearing to bolt in ..

that being said
what is this sled and you buy just that housing from Yam or wrecker and rivet back
into tunnel ?
Answer to question ,, could stuff one in with locktite weld to finish season but
ride with a bigger sled to pull you home.. Sell sled to someone that thinks
they can fix it.

I believe you will have to get a new housing. I guess it all depends how the new bearing fits in there.

How does something like this happen? Is it because the bearing froze ( stopped turning)

That's behind the secondary clutch. The bearing probably blew apart and the shaft was pulled by the belt and wearing that divot into the housing.

I think the bearing will go in there with a bit of massaging that divot a bit. You'll probably have to put the circlip in a way so the open end is pointing towards that divot so most of it is in the undamaged groove. Check the bearing at the other end of that shaft in the chaincase.

As mentioned above, maybe go in with a little fine tuning and some sleeve retaining compound like loctite 660 that will take up space up to .020”

.

The housing looks like it is fabricated into front frame and no repair part

.
I was also surprised that the jack shaft runs through the top of the engine block??...
This could be so much worse ... Looks like bearings that should be changed
on a schedule .
Good luck and do the best job possible the first time and check it before each ride
for a while.
Had a look at the same place on my APEX ,, built the same way... Ahh! .. for the old days.

I sent pics to Travis from BOP, and he believes I will only need a new shaft. So hoping that is the case!

The bearing completely let go and the drive shaft torqued enough to wear into the bearing housing. We stopped on the trail, and my son who was riding it said it would only go 70mph. I suppose this was the reason. Hopefully the chaincase side is ok. Will do bearings all around but it seems like the twisting would have had some impact in the case. Summer project for sure.

Well, why you're add it when talking with Travis, just have him add an empty primary as that is that I had to do vs just ordering that part and then have to deal with separating and re-balancing primary:

No, the jackshaft does NOT go thru the engine. Even the bolt in that picture does not go thru the engine; is just the bolt used to adjust motor in its mounts.

I fixed one like that for my buddy that never does any maintenance. You all have a friend like that right? He drove on the bad bearing so long that the jackshaft broke and the secondary ended up in the belly pan up in the UP. After cutting out the old bearing race with a dremel tool I smoothed out the metal around out the opening and since the bearing cup was less then 3/4 of the way damaged we got another jack shaft from BOP and some new bearings and put it back together. That was 5 years ago and it's still running, just went almost 350 miles with him this weekend. Yours doesn't look any worse.

ouch! that is why i repack that bearing every year when i do the speedo bearing. all balls made a kit that has the bearings and seals for that shaft including in the chaincase. they also make a kit for the drive axle if you want while you are in there.

Travis will certainly receive an order from me as soon as I take inventory on everything that needs to be replaced.

I've been repacking the bearings each year. I didn't this year because I only put around 250 miles on it last year but I should have checked them. Sled has 14k on it and new bearings were done around 6k I think. Anyway, I'll replace all 4 while I have it apart and may throw a new track on it.
