Went for a ride yesterday and the speedometer was on and off and then it went off for good. Was not reading correctly when it was working as well. I have never done any of the bearings to date with 6500 miles on it. It ran good and i made it home no problem. Is this a sign the speedo bearing is on its way out? I am not riding it until I find out whats going on as I dont want to be left stranded somewhere walking home.

Change that bearing Rod! I'll bet you'll need a sensor as well. Had mine go out 3 weeks ago with almost identical mileage. I DIDN'T stop when it acted up..... and broke the drive shaft the next day :o| :o| :o| We were 140 trail mi. from the hotel and 100 mi. by road. Ended up being a LONG day LOL!!

X2 My speedo acted up about 60km from home kept riding speed jumping all over the place. about 5 km from home zero on the speedo and awful clunking coming from the drive shaft area. Able to limp it home after looking at things Speedo bearing gone also took out the sensor. I think the bearing runs about 45 bucks the sensor 110 cdn. Hopefully your sensor is still working. Took about one hour to do the job. I also repacked the secondary clutch bearing at the same time. I was talking to my dealer and he said this bearing should be replaced between 5000-7000 km depending on your riding style. I had to use a punch and hammer to tap the bearing off the drive shaft. That was the hardest part of this job. Some guys have said to use never seize when you put the new bearing on. Oh ya my old bearing had lost the two set screws for the driveshaft. I had to pick those up at the same time.

Ok the speedo bearing is gone and it took out the sensor as well. I am have trouble taking the inner race off the shaft the outer race came out easy along with a few beat up ball bearing. I only had one set screw on the inner collar the other was gone. So how do I take this inner race off the shaft?

I have had them slip off, had to drive them off, and have taken the shaft out to use a grinder and cut 1 off. Try a good penetrating oil and let it soak a while. I wouldn't use any heat with the track being right there. Sometimes a good cold chisel and hammer can be used to score and split the race relieving it enough to slide off. Have fun LOL!!!

last one i had trouble with i melted off with a brazing tip and hit it with a chisel on a zip/burp gun.

Well I had enough of pissing around with this thing and went for the long haul. The sled and I are really getting personal now. I took the suspension out and noticed a couple of wheel bearing need to be changed will most likely just do them all. Got the chain case apart and I am down to taking the snap ring out of the bottom bearing. I need a bigger set of snap ring pliers as it just kept slipping on me so I called it a night there. Drained the oil in the engine as well and I may go with a reverse kit and extrovert drivers as well. Once I get the snap ring off the bottom chaincase bearing how do you take out the drive shaft just move it to one side then the other?

In order to drop the drive shaft you have to pull the chain case...trust me its the easiest. I have done them without pulling the skid and the track... but looks like you are past that point now.

Tom do I have to take the snap ring out of the bottom driver bearing on the case side to remove the drive shaft or just take the whole case off?

The snap ring will need to be taken off once the case is out only to replace that bearing and then you can drive out that bearing for replacement. The outer race is a slight press into the case and the inner race slips over the shaft.

I am still confused lol. First off I am down to the inner case the chain and bottom gear is off. Whats next, you say to pull the whole case off that means the top bearing must come too or does the case move off both bearings. Is there a how too for this job I looked and could not find one?

You want to call me?? Both bearings stay in the case. Once the disk is off, the case cover is off and linkage is removed. all the guts are out of the case with taken special care not to loose the little spring in the middle gear. You remove the bolts that hold the inner case 1/2 to the tunnel. Then wiggle the case 1/2 back and forth to pull it off the upper and lower shafts... the bearings stay in the inner case.

Hey finally success I am sure glad I took everything there was no way in hell I was going to get that off on the sled even on the bench I had to heat it up and beat it off with a hammer and chisel. Now that I have gotten this far and she is all apart what do you guys suggest for maintenance and possible upgrades? I am for sure going with extrovert drivers. The rest of the bearings are in excellent shape exceppt for some of the wheels in the the skid.
